It’s a shame that nobody commented on last week’s TOTPs show. Nobody commented on the previous week’s show either which makes me think that either (a) people are being shy or (b) nobody’s watching the programme any more Probably the latter, but just in case here's what's on tonight. Still watching Windy and look forward to your weekly posts. I haven't really posted because at the moment all I do is fast forward for the most part. I do enjoy seeing little snippets of the odd tune such as House On Fire by The Boomtown Rats (the man Geldof cannot dance by the way) for example, but this period of the charts was (for me anyway) very much more miss than hit. I do like the information you pack into your reports so please carry on Windy and I'll make more of an effort to participate even if it is FFD This week will be no exception, although I will watch Ebony & Ivory. I've got thick skin and can take all of the inevitable that'll no doubt come my way but back then I was one week away from my 13th birthday and thought Macca walked on water so bought the single and still have it somewhere. Might also watch Chas & Dave but the rest will just be a blur @ x30 speed Cheers Windy, look forward to next week and my 13th birthday

I was 18 years old when these shows were broadcast, so stuff from Haircut 100, Bucks Fizz, Chas & Dave, The Boomtown Rats, Elton John, Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder, Foster & Allen, and the Goombay Dance Band were simply just not on my radar. Pigbag is probably the only act I'm interested in seeing tonight (so that's a huge fast forward for me, lol). However, I'll watch the 7.30 show, as I do appreciate seeing TOTPs as a whole, and one of the unique things about TOTPs is the huge eclectic range of music that you get in one show. There's really always something for everyone.

I'm with you Steve and also got the single when it came out. I'm not too concerned with the lyrics, more the tune, which I quite like.
Keep up the good work on the reviews lads. Always an enjoyable read
Gene.

Shalamar got dropped from the 7.30 show, which means Zoo didn't make the early cut again. Never happened to did it.....

Have no fear Windy this is one of the top threads on the forum. Your posts are very well informed and presented. I have these shows recorded as i was away on holiday and i plan to watch them soon. I thought the Goombay Dance discussions the other week were hilarious

No worries Windy thanks for the reviews always appreciated. The last few TOTP ep's haven't really interested me hence why I've not really watched them but and as you say and this is the big difference with music shows these days there's always something to keep you interested with TOTP. Today it's either 'too cool for school' stuff on C4/BBC Four/red button (although I do generally like those type of music shows) or mind numbingly bland pop-crap bread and circus's like X Factor and The Voice (sic) etc. which seems to draw in the brain dead masses. Maybe we'd have a more eclectic and balanced music scene these days if TOTP came back?

Maybe we'd have a more eclectic and balanced music scene these days if TOTP came back? I doubt it DE, the pool of current acts are all the same or samey at least. They'd surely have the use chart acts and I've never heard of any of them. I guess that's why we enjoy the TOTP repeats.
"Proper" bands are few & far between these days and even the non electronic acts such as Ed Sheeran, James Bay, George Ezra, Shaun Escoffery etc are in my opinion so I wouldn't watch it anyway. I did think the recent new Travis album was OK though.
I sometimes start at the first music channel and scroll up to the end and about the only channel I stay on for more than a millisecond is Vintage. I'm not surprised by this, I do it just to assure myself that modern music is still plop!!

As TOTPs reflects the charts, it would just be the Justin Bieber show. The poor guy would be exhausted considering all the records that he has in the charts. The other thing is the Top 10 is almost total stagnation at the moment - the only changes from last week to this week being the record at #8 went down to #9, and the record at #9 went up to #8. All other records were non movers (#1 still Chainsmokers Ft. Halsey for those interested)

Interesting points lads. The main issue with the charts ATM is the whole downloading thing has created a stagnat scene where popular and say media manipulated things are around for months and the new/innovative/cutting edge stuff is totally ignored or if it does break through it seems quickly forgotten. As much as some on here may have hated the dance (and indie) scenes of the 90s they did evolve and a lot of interesting things IMO did emerge. Since the twin appearance of Z Factor acts and (perhaps manipulated) downloading in the mid Noughties not much has really excited me as it did 15-20 years earlier. Still there are good things around and like in years past always good to look beyond the Top 40 anyway. Maybe becoming a old get has something to do with it but why do I feel new material from bands/acts in their 40s/50s seem more interesting than the bland, stage managed, pedestrian stuff done by kids almost 30 years younger than them... yeah some of the examples you quote Steve are a good case in point!
