I thought with the release of the new song All For One it's appropriate to create a thread for the Roses and the new single. www.thestoneroses.org/Haven't properly heard the song yet and will do a proper review when I do. First impressions (for me) it seems a bit tame/too similar to much of the pop-indie around at the moment but I'll give it a proper go when I hear it in full and maybe clicks/grows on me. Just hope it expands rather than tarnishes their legacy!

Wasn't sure there would be anything on this forum about it but I guess they are a band with roots in the 80's and so it makes sense I suppose. I listened to it just after 8pm last night on six music and then downloaded it from itunes and have listened to it dozens of times. This morning I pre-ordered the CD which is available on July 1st, quite a time to wait and I hope I haven't played it to death by then. There is no "B" side which is disappointing but after waiting 21 years for this, I'm not going to complain. Yes, it is not as great a comeback single as "Love Spreads", it is no "I Am The Resurrection" but it is all there; the Squiresque guitar riffs, Reni's drumming, great bassline and of course, Ian Browns manc vocals, albeit electronically processed. It is a little repetitive and lyrically sparse/tame but it is a positive message, akin to John Lennon looking at Yoko's "yes" through a magnifying glass; simple but effective. OK, a pretentious comment perhaps but it does seem to sum it up for me. I am happy enough with it and it serves as a fine teaser for the album. I am not sure what people have been expecting but to my mind, it is much better than anything currently (except for Steve Mason perhaps) available but perhaps that says more about my age You can tell I am a fan but believe me, it doesn't mean I would praise them for recording them peeing in a can, I can see this being a firm favourite during their forthcoming live shows. More please

Thanks for the review Steve. I'll be ordering the single too and perhaps I'll listen/enjoy it as some new music and not try and compare it to what they did in 1989/90 as nothing will be the same as that material. I've liked the stuff Ian Brown has done solo and Mani's work with Primal Scream and others so glad to have them back. Out of interest are you going the live shows this year? Perhaps I was harsh putting them in the Bands That Should Stop thread.

I'm not going to the live shows, I can picture it now; old men like me re-living their youth and young lads bowling around like IB/LG clones, not for me mate. I have heard IB live before too

Just heard All For One on the radio in work. If perhaps not great it’s a good effort and the snippets I heard on the TV this morning don’t do it justice. Sounds a bit like a updated Waterfall but then All For One has some different sounds/quirks in the mix too – possibly showing the solo journey’s and influences the boys have been on since 1996, although why am I getting the feeling of ' Ten Mile Smile' from Shadowcastre from the Spike Island film when listening to All of One?... Not a like for like comparison as the songs/sounds are quite different but I think All For One has a sort of similar in feel to it like New Order’s Krafty from 2005. Both are half-decent efforts but they don’t really come close to the classic material of old. I enjoyed it and overall would give it 8/10. I’d sooner All For One have some chart action compared to 90% of the *@~! in the charts and the lamebrains which front them ATM which are severely over-exposed! Yeah that's what's kind of put me off those gigs mate and just have the feeling my 'time' should've been Spike Island or thereabouts... but as the 90's progressed got more into dance music/clubs and the rest is history. Also heard a few nasty tales from the Heaton Park/Finsbury Park gigs they did recently so perhaps best to let it lie!

I went to Manchester now and then in 1986 or 7 & saw 'Stone Roses' spray painted in large letters on public buildings in the centre, possibly the central library. I was told by my brother who lived there that the band had done it. One way of getting known but it struck me as an incriminating thing to do. My bedroom was next to one of my brothers & he used to play 'So Young' every day several times a day, I got a bit fed up with hearing "in a misery dictionary..." I can tell you. Remember seeing them on a Granada arts show hosted by Tony Wilson called The Other Side Of Midnight & their notorious appearance on The Late Show.
