Comprehensive set of smudges Dirty How did you track them all down, do you know Liverpool well? Thanks Arthur. Yes I'm originally from there. Roughly knew where most of the non city centre locations where but had to do a bit of detective work with Garswood Steet and Kelvin Grove and despite passing through some of the area's it was a first time I'd been to some of the exact locations too.

An amazing set of Now & Then's DE. Well done for going and getting them. They have changed my perception of Liverpool entirely - not a single car on bricks spotted I'm familiar with the Albert Dock area with The Beatles Museum being there. It's remarkable how much has changed in regenerating the area, but with keeping the infrastructure in tact. By the look of one of the screen grabs from BFTBS, the dock has completely silted up. Thanks Windy and glad you like them. I suppose Liverpool's like every city in the UK it has good and bad things in it. If you go looking for either you'll find it and as I've said before the city has taken many steps forward since BFTB... but has also taken a few back (community, values, pride, crime, greed, political apathy etc.) which if improved would make it one of the UK's great cities. I did enjoy checking these locations out (some old haunts too) but I'm not naive enough to have visited these locations with say eyes in the back of my head so to speak... or is that Speke wait a minute Speke wasn't used in BFTB! LOL! We've been to locations as (or more) dodgy on some of the Sweeney meets in London and my advice to anyone thinking of visiting Liverpool is do it and whatever impression you get good/bad at least you've given it a go. As for the Albert Dock thank **** the 1970's skyscrapers didn't happen. As much as I hate Liverpool's clinging to past glories etc. and being a modernist at heart I'm sure these would have ended up as white elephant unoccupied offices when Liverpool's downturn occurred during that decade onwards. I remember a bus journey with my dad from Dingle to the city centre in the early 1980's and seeing all the unoccupied docks and the rebuilding of the Albert Dock in the late 1980's but again passage of time makes this hazy and the Albert Dock has been in this regenerated form for quite a while now. Many good things have been attracted to the city centre in recent years Liverpool 1, Echo Arena, Museums etc. but I feel more work needs to be done. Anyway enough chit chat glad you lads appreciate and enjoy the locations I've discovered here. There's nothing else which touches it for BFTB elsewhere on the web!

Fantastic work throughout DE. Looking through them all again it has given me the urge to watch the series again as I have the box set but haven't watched them for years.
It has given me the urge to watch it again so I've just this minute bought the box set from eBay.
Cheers DE, thanks for taking the time to smudge these locations and post them up.
Sam.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I go to Liverpool often and the last time I went was a few weeks ago. On the last morning I went for a cycle ride to Princes Park. On the way back I turned onto Kelvin Grove and instantly had a flashback to Boys From The Blackstuff. I wasn't looking for it but I instinctively felt it was Yosser's road. It might be a bit sad but I'm intrigued with stuff like this but I found nothing to confirm it was the road until I came to this great site and your brilliant posts. I've since realised I've been to quite a few of the locations used on the series but hadn't realised it so I'm going up there again soon and I'm going to do the rounds. Boys From The Blackstuff was the pinnacle of a time when you looked forward all week to the Play for Today, when you'd frequently get something realistic and relevant from the up and coming playwrights of the day.
There's nothing like that today that I know of and I totally agree with you on the Downtown Abbey tripe and the like. I noticed the same thing with a succession of programmes showing off our "betters" and when England was great codswallop. What's that got to do with us? Complete waste of energy and money which could be used to promote the fresh talent that must be out there.
I'm trying to find the name of an old Play for Today which was about an old lady in London who got mugged in a subway by skinheads. While on the floor a black Rastafarian came to her aid. She was scared at first but he took her home to his sister and they looked after her. Weeks passed and they had a birthday party for her and she came out the bedroom with her face painted black because she wanted to fit in. I can't remember the end but the play always stuck with me. Does anyone know what play I'm on about or am I making it up which I probably am ?
Thanks for the posts Dirty Epic, they're wicked mate.

Glad you found this thread useful Don and by the way mate welcome to the forum When you get a chance Don why not introduce yourself in the Welcome New Members section >>Welcome new members<< I'm sure you will get a warm welcome There is a chance that one or two of our members will be able to recall this Play For Today you remember. Their knowledge of retro telly past staggers me sometimes. They often come up with things I know nothing about. Hope you don't mind but I put a couple of spaces into your post above to help make it look better when viewed on small phone screens.

Welcome to the forum Don. I've not seen it but I've read about the Play For Today with the elderly woman 'blacking up', it's 'Waterloo Sunset'. Actually Queenie Watts who plays the woman was only 55 so not so old & she sadly died aged 56. Judging by the clip Catherine Tate may well have based her Gran character on her. www.imdb.com/title/tt0675346/There's a clip of the beginning of it on youtube ( also seen is Leslie Sarony, who plays Soldier in the first Sweeney episode 'Ringer' ) so it's out there somewhere ( I noticed you could buy a copy on the auction site ioffer, though I'm not sure if it's still being sold ). Someday I think there'll be a huge dvd boxset of Play For Todays similar to the recent Alan Clarke set, in the meantime there are quite a few available on various dvd collections & a fair amount on youtube if you dig about. The BBC has a very small selection of some of the most famous ones to download on its site, last time I looked there were about half a dozen, not very impressive considering there's over 300 of them! A thread on Play For Today would be good, trouble is there's so many of them & most aren't available to watch so it's difficult to know what to say about them.

I thought you might know Arthur but I didn't want to raise hopes and jinx it I know one or two of the most famous plays from the series. I agree with Don that the series had a high reputation. Feel free to start any thread on a show as that's what this place is all about.
