On the Die hard films, to me only the first two were watchable, I don't like Bruce Willis which doesn't help. I can't remember a Bruce Willis film I enjoyed really. I saw the action film Hostage (2005) recently but didn't think much of it. Vi

Vi If you want a rock-bottom Bruce Willis film then there's nothing lower than >>> The Return Of Bruno <<< as it was absolute shite. How he managed to get so many real 'names' to appear I've no idea but it must have been off of the back of his appearance in 'Moonlighting'. Sam.

The first two Die Hard films are classics

Really liked the first two Die Hard's they just about worked. Vengeance was poor and not really necessary and not bothered with the rest!

Watched the film version of Joe Orton's play 'Loot' recently, despite a good cast & a Galton & Simpson screenplay it was easily one of the most tedious & unfunniest films I've seen. I was so irritated by it that I turned it off halfway through.
Btw, on the subject of Dirty Harry sequels I watched 'Sudden Impact' again recently & it was at times seriously misjudged for a story about the brutal rape of two women. You might remember that Harry is given a bulldog as a present by a colleague ( a Black guy who is later killed of course ) which acts as a comic relief device in case the storyline of a woman shooting rapists in the crotch gets too much, at one point the dog even farts

I've never seen the play or the film, but Kenneth Williams mentions it a lot in his diaries and the backlash the stage version got at the time, audiences walking out etc. I wonder if it was Galton and Simpson's adaptation that was bad or if it was one of those Orton works that was either loved or loathed ?

They, as you imply, are just unpleasant with bizarre plots. The last one has him killing someone with a huge spear gun I think, presumably as a nod to the original premise of the series - a good police officer is someone who is a good shot with very large calibre weapons, judgement and morals take a back seat.

The first Dirty Harry film was written by a husband & wife team, Harry & Rita Fink, whilst it's a very good film it doesn't seem too authentic compared to other police films like The French Connection which was based on the experiences of actual detectives. There is something a bit dubious about the films, notably the way Harry's partners in the first three films, a Latino, Black & female, ie. all 'minorities', are hospitalised & killed, the message seeming to be 'leave it to the white man'. Speaking of Kenneth Williams, he mentions a number of these types of films in his diaries, refering to them as 'fascist pictures', this is how they were described by the more liberal critics of the time despite Williams being a man of Conservative views.
I'm not that familiar with Joe Orton's plays but I get the impression that his scandalous death has a lot to do with the fact that he's still talked about. Possibly they had to censor some of the play's content for the film version, none of the dialogue in the film was memorable or funny. Oddly enough the story reminded me of the Auf W Pet episode 'Last Rites' as it involves hiding stolen money in a coffin, by strange coincidence one of the undertakers in the film is played by Aubrey Woods who appears in 'Last Rites' as the manager of the massage parlour.
Loot was very much of its time when homosexuality was still a taboo subject ( the two young leads played by Hywell Bennett & Roy Holder are gay/bisexual ) & the digs at the police, the Catholic Church, etc. now look very dated & obvious. Regardless of the content it just wasn't a funny script. I saw 'Entertaining Mr Sloane' as well recently & that was better but still not very funny at all.
