I agree too that maybe the B & W episodes don't surpass WHTTLL but I quite enjoy them when I have seen them - I view them as small prequels and snap shots of the past for Bob and Terry and amusing to see their early days.

Have had a bit of a binge of the surviving black and white episodes recently. Although the feel of them is generally different to Whatever (especially the very generic chirpy sitcom theme tune) they do hold up very well imo. I think my favourite is Last Of The Big Spenders, when they pull Wanda Ventham and Wendy Richard without legislating for how much they were going to fork out! What with the recentish blu-ray release of the LL film, there are now 10 survivors available. Half of the total of the original series that were made. Be so great if more can be found. Fingers crossed. Currently enjoying the Xmas special, as I always do around this time. The forklift scene is silly, but classic! I agree with you PP, the original B&W episodes stand up on their own, after all they would not have done WHTTLL if they didn't. The later WHTTLL series shows a maturity in the characters which coincides with the maturity of the writers Clement & La Frenais, 5 years on, bear in mind that they wrote "Villain" in between. Easy to forget that the original series was their first and came as a result of a small 10 minute script written for a producers course. Like yourself, I also enjoy re-watching the Xmas special and am eternally grateful to Gene for organising the tour of the Elm Lodge housing estate some years ago which only adds to the enjoyment.

Ah yes, the Elm Lodge housing estate. Great days.
I seem to recall a photo op based on carrying an invisible tea chest up to Bob's front door!
Sadly no-one had an invisible forklift truck!

That's a good summary 36 Million Dollar Man (6 Million plus inflation). The writers and characters had matured, also they got to use a lot of outside locations which probably changed the dynamic a well. Along with Porridge, my favourite 70's sitcom.

Sorry, but that will remain private. The innocent invisible tea chest carriers have to be protected! Besides, having decided that it's not for me, I'm cancelling my Instagram, so I've nowt to post pics from. For now, anyway.
