'The Likely Lads' very rarely gets shown & 10 of the 20 episodes are missing, in fact I think many people don't know about the series & are unaware that 'Whatever' is a follow up.
It's a good series but I do think it gets repeated far too often.

Should've added that the early black & white 'Steptoe And Son' & other comedies suffer the same fate, the colour Steptoes have been regularly repeated over the years whilst the b&w episodes are rarely shown. Tony Hancock, Harry Worth, early Dick Emery & Benny Hill, all seldom seen. Much like radio stations playing the same songs over & over whilst ignoring early work or album tracks by the same artists.

I’ve only ever seen a couple of Likely Lads episodes, as you say they tend not to repeat black and white stuff. Could put it on BBC4.

Have had a bit of a binge of the surviving black and white episodes recently. Although the feel of them is generally different to Whatever (especially the very generic chirpy sitcom theme tune) they do hold up very well imo. I think my favourite is Last Of The Big Spenders, when they pull Wanda Ventham and Wendy Richard without legislating for how much they were going to fork out!
What with the recentish blu-ray release of the LL film, there are now 10 survivors available. Half of the total of the original series that were made. Be so great if more can be found. Fingers crossed.
Currently enjoying the Xmas special, as I always do around this time. The forklift scene is silly, but classic!

I'm a bit 50/50 on the 60s black and white series, I think the 70s Whatever series was much better and it completely overshadowed it

Absolutely. The 60s b&w series is somewhat inferior to WHTLL, of that there's no doubt.
But I do think a little shout out to the original is called for. It's the same stars and same writers and the same characters that are already consistent with the Bob and Terry that we enjoy in the 70s.
It is quite nice to see them both without any female ties and be able to play the field with no consequences. Well, of the marriage threatening type anyway!
WHTLL is definitely peerless in comparison, but I do have a bit of a fondness for the original.

I really like the 60s episodes. I do hope some more of the lost episodes turn up. WHTTLL really was Clement and La Frenais fine tuning what was already a very successful series into top drawer tv. It would have been interesting to see the similar development of Porridge as Going Straight, if it were not for the tragic early passing of Richard Beckinsale. Not many writers pulled off this trick of successfully revisiting sitcom characters further down the line.
