This is a BBC4 show on now about BBC1 and ITV fighting it out for audience numbers.
Looks quite interesting.
Must be a repeat as it's got Brucie in it.

It was quite good, especially the part focussing on the early years in the 70's.

Getting that Saturday night audience was a big deal back in the day
In the days before Remote Controls often if you got them early you had them for the night! Personally I was never put off by having to get up to change channel but seemingly it was a bridge too far for many viewers
Here's the iPlayer link....
Michael Grade tells a tale of television skullduggery and dirty dealings in the battle to win the Saturday night ratings crown.

I watched this last night and found the programme fascinating. I've seen a few similar ones over recent years, but this one gave good coverage to the deals behind the scenes between execs and talent. The story of how Paul Smith from Celador sold the idea of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire to ITV boss David Liddiment by getting him to play the game in his office by risking the cash he had in his wallet on the day was very amusing. No in-depth reports or focus groups, just "play the game and I'll show you it works". The Generation Game coverage was also quite interesting. I had seen coverage of Brucie's failure to bring the audience with him when defecting to ITV before, but hadn't realised Game For A Laugh was such a big deal that it killed the Generation Game ratings. Interesting too that LWT in the late 60s were convinced Saturday night audiences wanted opera and highbrow poetry.
