American actor James Caan has passed away. He acted in many films most notably The Godfather in Which he played Sonnie Corleone. He also starred in Misery with Kathy Bates. ( I still can't bear thinking about the scene in which Kathy smashes his ankles with a sledgehammer to prevent him escaping )
James was still posting stuff up on twitter up till last month, mostly stills and observations on his films.
RIP James.

Sad news.
James Caan's roles seemed to be most prolific throughout the 70s (I may be wrong) then tailed off a bit in the 80s.
I did appreciate the Godfather films but Rollerball was a bit of an odd one for the characters that he played.
R.I.P. James.

I've just been looking at a wikipedia article on Caan. It had a very long list of film roles that Caan rejected in the 70s and 80s. They were in films that turned out to be hugely successful and without a doubt they would have made him into a much bigger star than he was. He just wasn't interested in doing them. I wish he had though.
He took a break from acting for most of the 80s for various reasons, the main one being depression over the loss of his beloved sister to leukaemia.

More than held his own in Godfather I and II and great in others - Rollerball and The Yards spring to mind
Also marvellous performance alongside Kathy Bates in the psycho drama Misery.
Two leads at the top of their game
Anyone seen Rollerball since the 70s
I loved it when I saw it in the cinema as a kid don't think I've seen it since
Doesn't seem to crop up on TV
Wonder why?
Too violent? Dodgy attitudes?
