Mess with your head fact of the day....
Grease was made in 1978 and set in 1959
That's the same as a musical film made today and set in 2003

Thirty nine years ago today I had my train crew depot transfer request accepted for my move from Stonebridge Park (at Wembley) to nearby Old Oak Common, neither depot exists today in the same form - Stonebridge disappeared when Wembley Yard was modernised for Eurotunnel traffic in the '90s and Old Oak has recently been demolished to make way for the new Crossrail project. It seems like a lifetime ago now but I can remember writing out the little 'chit' and handing it in to the roster clerk as if it were only yesterday! Villain

The era which I loved, the second half of the 70s, with The Sweeney, Blondie, Porridge, every other car being a Mark 4 Cortina, etc, is now closer in time to World War 2 than to the present day!
Take 1978, the end of the war was then 33 years ago. 33 years ago from 2022 is 1989. Strange when you think about it🙁

To make that even worse, it was made during the summer of 1977 - and released in 1978!
So - a film made in 2002/2003 is the same time span - and not really much has changed when compared to that between 1959 and 1977/78.
When "Grease" was released in 1978 - WW2 had only ended 33 years earlier.
33 Years ago - it was 1989 and I was in my 2nd to last year at School.

I started school not long after the first moon landing, it's now fifty years or so since the last astronauts set foot on its surface. Where did all that time go....?!! Villain

Villain I was about 7 or 8 (can't remember the exact date of the moon landing and can't be bothered to check) but I do remember we had a day off school to watch it on telly
Then again, we had to write a couple of pages about it in our school books
They gave with one hand and took away with the other

I've been having these sorts of thoughts for how relative time is for many years now. The first one that struck me was some years ago while watching the 1955 film of The Dambusters. Operation Chastise was carried out in 1943 so the film was only 12 years after the event. That is equivalent to making a film today of an event from 2010. If we took it as being 10 years after the end of the war then that's equivalent making a film today of an event in 2012 - as if the London Olympics could really compare with WW2! Going back to WW2 itself one of my other thoughts has been that whilst the 6 years were obviously dark times and protracted for all involved, look at how the country is still impacted by what took place in just six years. I'm not referring to bomb damage but rather to constructions and fortifications that still exist across the country whether they be concrete defences, pill-boxes, airfields, hangars, gun emplacements and so on. There was a huge amount of work in building these places that didn't exist before the war yet here we are 77 years later and the legacy of all these constructions, quite rightly, remain when other buildings have come and gone in that time. It is testament to the war effort and the remembrance of all involved that these should survive. Sam.

Interesting topic timelines. Another fact is that I have known people born in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. My gran was born in 1886, and died in 1979, her lifetime spanned from the Victorian era to the end of the 70s, in musical terms people like Elgar and Tchaikovsky at one end and disco, new wave and punk at the other!
My son was born in 2006, who knows what he will see?
