Well this is a rare one...!!! It must have been hard for Reg Varney to shake off his saucy bus driver image but he did try! Who remembers 'Down the 'Gate'??!! It ran for two series in 1975 and 1976... Down the 'Gate (1975) (Fancy a Skol anyone???) It's not too bad to be fair... Not great but it raises a chuckle every now and again. By the way... Am I the only one that thinks that Reg would've made a great Sweeney crook?!?!

Vaguely. I didn't think it was particularly good from memory, although I haven't seen it since it was originally on.
Don't see Reg as a villain, I always think of him as a slightly harassed, work shy, working class bloke.

Yes I've watched a few episodes, not a bad show but it's no On The Buses obviously, though it's an improvement on Don't Drink The Water.
The Network dvd contains the only existant copies taped off tv at home by Reg Varney himself, they contain the original ad breaks. Picture quality isn't great as you'd expect.
Varney was a great performer & showed he could pull off straight acting in 'The Best Pair Of Legs In The Business'. Would've made a good Herbie Mew type in The Sweeney.

'Don't Drink The Water' was particularly bad (I have no doubt it is already in the 'dodgy spin-offs' thread)...!!! Shame really as I think that Butler could've been used in a better spin-off vehicle personally.

Butler really needed an adversary like Stan or Jack to wind him up for the show to work, he doesn't really have one in Don't Drink The Water so he's just left to whine about the heat & the Spanish food, also Pat Coombs is irritating as his sister.

I could see him as a ‘Stan Morris’ type.

I think I would have liked to have seen him go completely 'against character' and play a right tough nut...!!
