A film I’ve really liked for a long time, and one that is definitely a cult film. Albert Finney stars as Eddie Ginley a club host who places an advert in the local paper offering his services as a private detective. A surprise offer comes his way to find a young woman and his life (naturally) is in danger as he gets more involved. It’s a film that swaps from straight detective film, film noir spoof, comedy, and all of that at once. Albert Finney to my mind is at his best as this character who moves from the mundane to fantasy with some typical Liverpudlian quick fire wit, as he tussles with shadowy adversaries and his family. The film has a few plot threads that come together unexpectedly and keeps your attention to the end. It’s said that a good script editor would have smoothed the plot out, and this would have moved the film from cult to mainstream classic. Some don’t like it’s racist quips, however it is a product of its time and should be viewed as such. Its also another film from that era that makes a knowing and effective use of its urban setting (Liverpool in this Case).

It's an excellent film, agree. A while since I've seen it, must rewatch it. The Liverpool locations and filming are very good

I like Gumshoe a lot too Bojan. I wish they would have made a sequel, as I'm sure it would have been at least reasonably successful. Albert Finney is really good in the film. The Lime Street Railway station location has changed a lot over the years. I went to the Social Club featured in the film once or twice years ago. It's only about two miles from were I live.

Proper impressed with the social club visit Charles. I thought they’d just stuck a big neon on a random building and done the interiors elsewhere.

I'm not sure if it was still open prior to the Covid Crisis and the lockdowns. I can remember going there for my brother's wedding reception and possibly one or two other occasions. It's such a shame that loads of these social clubs have closed down over the years though. Charles.

I've got this saved on my Sky Q box and have watched it a couple of times, a very likeable film. This was Finney's first film after "Scrooge", another one I have saved. Come to think of it, I also have "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" saved too.
I think Finney is a trememdous actor and if you get the chance to, watch "Gumshoe". It's often referred to as a crime comedy but I don't think of it as that, it is more of a drama.
