Came across this entire Southbank Show episode with Jimmy Nail, where he talks about Auf Pet.
Quite a treat, as I have never seen this before.

I will give this a viewing tomorrow. Really looking forward to seeing Jimmy in his home town. I was only watching Melvin Bragg on Sky Arts this morning doing a John Hurt profile which was pretty good.

Just looking through the BFI catalogue for the Southbank Show - there are lots I'd like to see.

Thanks for the link Sparky, hopefully Sky Arts might include a edited version of this one in the near future. IIRC didn't some of his comments in this South Bank Show programme irk his sister Val McLane? Seem to remember something being in the papers about it at that time.

Yes, I seem to remember something like that. The press has a lot to answer for with this series - especially the way they treated Gary Holton just before and after his death.

I remember watching this & taping it when it was on, I think I still have it on the end of a tape, I remember I recorded it on long play as there was only 30 mins left on the video I put in the machine. At the time I thought Nail didn't come across very well & didn't appreciate the incidental music they keep playing, didn't expect Nail to be like Oz of course but I find him a bit pretentious whenever I've seen him interviewed. La Frenais says he was a pain in the arse during series 2 of AWP, producer Allan McKeown went further & described him as a 'nightmare' & an 'arsehole'.
I watched a South Bank Show on director Michael Powell on Sky Arts a bit ago but was disappointed to see that they edit the original shows down to 30 mins & include newly recorded material.

Yes it's a bit of a pain the Sky Arts ones get edited but have found a few good ones on there over the last couple of months Arthur.
Yes I think Jimmy and his Oz character are different animals with the real Jimmy having a lot less of a sense of humour and a 'know who I am' superiority complex which leaves a bit of a bad taste. Never met him probably don't really want to but the irony is he's been in and played a fair few characters I've really liked over the years... Spender particularly which was about as far removed as you could get from Oz.
Suppose he should be lucky he did 'make it' with AWP as if not he'd be a late middle aged ner-do-well knocking around the North East in all likelihood.

I know he was working on 'The Last Ship' musical/play with Sting trying to get that on a run in Broadway in New York but Sting pulled out and it then bombed but IIRC that was about 3-5 years ago. I know he had a part in the stage show verison of Jeff Lynne's 'War of the Worlds' too before this but not sure if that wasn't for all that long a time and whether someone else took that over.
Yes I'm surprised he isn't and hasn't really been in anything noticeable film/TV-wise over this last decade he'd be no worse than some of the faces that are perpetually on the screen in recent years especially in contemporary drama too.
