Today would have been Barry Sheene's 70th birthday had he sadly not succumbed to cancer on 10th March 2003 at the age of only 52. I've been a lifelong fan of Barry and was fortunate enough to meet him on a couple of occasions, the best of those being at the Goodwood Revival meetings in 2001 and 2002. Although I can't claim to know him, it was clear from everyone that did meet him or know him that he was truly "down to earth" yet still considerate and affable to all. Certainly at Goodwood he was sat in a fold-up chair in the paddock and receptive to all that stopped to chat whereas all other drivers and riders were hidden away. Here is one of my pics where he is chatting to a young lad that does not have a clue who he is but the father definitely does: I remember cheering him on just yards from the finish line and watching the finish of what was to be his final race. Yet for a person with, albeit unknown at the time, only six months to live he was still a racer and went all out to win. Here's the last couple of laps at Goodwood racing with Wayne Gardener: I'll not go into his life or career here as it is so well documented but I still have a huge respect and awe for Barry and his achievements throughout his life. R.I.P. Barry
