I had a look on the BBC sounds app at the available podcasts but cant find that specific programme which is annoying. I can see it on the BBC Sounds app, to stream it anyway. I don’t use podcasts.

The rogue Merc in the background would be mine. Or maybe the Wedge for sentimental reasons.

I've been reading a bit more about Leyland recently and it was really doomed from the start. It was a merger, in 1968, between Leyland motors, a profitable and successful bus and truck maker, which also included Rover and Triumph on the car side, and BMC, who had merged with Jaguar a year before, to become British Motor holdings. BMH, was very close to collapse.
The head of the new British Leyland was Donald Stokes, who had been chief at Leyland motors, and apparently, when he found out what a mess BMH was, he tried to pull out and cancel the merger, but couldn't. He wanted a new car to complete with the Cortina, but, apparently George Harriman, the BMH, head had instructed that they were not going to enter into head on competition with it. At a stroke, the centre of the market had been surrendered to Ford, and the last new cars from BMH, the Maxi, 1800 and 3 litre, were sales disasters.
As a result, Stokes instigated a crash programme to get the Marina started, which had to be a rush job. The next new design, the Allegro, was a gamble to go for exports to Europe, and replace the 1100, so BL threw everything they had at it, unfortunately, it was a complete dud.
On the bus and truck side too, it went wrong. They brought a boffin called Albert Fogg in from the motor industry research association, to design a new range of engines, his idea was to do away with a separate cylinder head, and have the block and head in one casting. Two versions were designed, the 0500 and 0700. The 0700 had to be dropped as they found out it was too big to fit under the Ergomatic cab, and the 0500 was used the Leyland National bus. It turned out to be noisy, smoky and difficult to maintain and bus operators didn't like it.
The other failure was a V8 which AEC had designed for their trucks, it had a short stroke, when a long stroke engine gives more torque, which is what is needed in a truck. AEC decided that it was a bad idea and canned the design, before putting it into production, however, BL over ruled them and insisted it went ahead, and it was a total failure, leading to penetration of the truck market by Volvo and Scania.

British Leyland Training Video - The Best Mini Yet. The Saint I love it that they make such a big play of the most insgnificant features, coach lines, door pockets and vanity mirror for example. Didn't hear a mention of heater rear windows though, maybe wasn't available in 78 Minis.
