It is very timely that Bolly has resurrected this thread, here's my latest:
Our youngest daughter has a 2011 second generation BMW Mini, not my choice of motor but she likes it.
Anyway, I'd noticed that when she started it the starter motor wasn't running at full power so told her that the battery was on its way out. This morning it gave up the ghost completely so being thorough and knowing modern automotive electrics design I checked online on battery replacement for anything to be aware of.
And of course there is... maybe.
If there is an "IBS" unit then the new battery has to be registered to the car, if it is not registered then some of the electric systems will be shut down: interior lights, indicators, electric windows...
If there isn't an IBS unit then the battery can be swapped out without it needing to be registered.
Great, her car doesn't have an IBS unit so I can (and did) swap the battery myself.
Result? Electric systems shut down: interior lights, indicators, windows dead, dead as the proverbial Dodo.
Now I find that there is a footwell module (an ECU in the footwell) that can lose it's program if the battery goes flat or is disconnected that I have to get reset.
Why? It is a f**king battery for Christ's sake! Does it really need all that stuff to get it to work? Does it have to be so complicated?
I think IBS is the perfect descriptor for it, it is enough to give anyone the shits.

I know what you mean there Sam. Far too complicated and unnecessary. I had a similar issue with my 370z a few years ago. Battery decided it didn't want to turn over a 3.7 engine over the course of another winter so I got the dreaded 'clicks' one cold morning when I tried to fire her up. So I stuck it on charge to get enough power to get it to a garage to purchase a new battery. A few hours later, tried her again and she firred up immediately. Trouble was though, trying to start it when it was flat had triggered 'limp mode' so the car had the power of a milk float.
p***ed off? you bet I was. Thankfully I had an ODBII reader so was able to clear it myself or that would have been 100 notes down at the dealership to get cleared on top of a new battery.
Whatever happened to motors you could work on yourself. Ones that didn't have a massive black cowling covering everything in the bay to stop you messing? Never any such problems in the Cortina or Quattro!

We have the same problem on our Peugeot vans at work, when any fault is detected it goes into a countdown more and eventually stops working altogether. Never had this problem if the battery was a bit low on charge in my Austin A40, it had a starting handle😀

Never any such problems in the Cortina or Quattro! Gene. That's the next pain in the jacksie, it also shuts down the ECU communication so my OBDII reader doesn't even read the fault let alone allow me to clear it. No, the module has to come out and go to someone who has the right kit to access the ECU and reset it. Also when looking at the prices for batteries I noted that thankfully the car doesn't have the stop-start function otherwise the battery would have been 200 quid instead of 80 quid! Sam.

Sorry to hear that Essex, I hope you feel better soon. Sam. Thanks Sam, seems to have peaked yesterday so should be ok for tomorrow. First ruined Christmas I've had, fortunately didn't have a big number of guests coming down.
