Pot holes. I had to do an essential shopping trip today and have to say the state of the roads is worse than it has been for some years. Not a single stretch of road without massive potholes left right and centre. I've emailed the council about one in particular that could cause an accident it is so deep. No reply so far.. but someone sent me this earlier which I found to be amusing, yet quite true..

Couldn't agree more!
I've never seen such massive ones, they've just stopped fixing them at all.
It's no just side roads either, the M11 is getting bad as well.

Councils often seem to blame bad weather or underfunding for problems with their road surfaces. Sadly, many UK roads, particularly the so-called minor ones, have been in a poor state for many years. I regularly used to report pot holes and bad road surfaces in my area, but it was many weeks or months before any maintenance was done to try and fix the problem Vi

The roads were not gritted to anywhere near the normal levels for this kind of weather where I am. You can see a lot of new damage caused by ice already.

We had 4 pot holes on our street - all close by, 2 of them had been circled.
Up roll the council and just fill in the two circled ones. It wouldn't have cost them anything to carry the shovel 50yards to the other two holes. So again - someone else has come out, assessed the additional 2 holes, and now we await the Tarmac truck to roll up again.
How the hell is this good use of taxpayers cash?

"The grit we use is ineffective before the snow falls, it has to be spread after snowfall. If we use grit that is effective before Snowfall, it is much more expensive, and not economically viable as it isn't often we get snow each year. It's too expensive to have it stored up just in case."
And I thought Grit was Grit. So - if we are lucky, we will see a gritter after Snow fall, where it's will thaw, the sun will drop, and it then becomes an ice rink.

That would be understandable if they then went out with the gritter but here only the trunk roads were done and far less of the the side roads than usual. I can't see why they didn't wait on standby until the forecast snow did actually start to fall then grit so as not to waste any if they don't have enough or are trying to save dough. Sounds like the usual council excuses really because every other year they spread the stuff the evening of forecasted snow. Have they suddenly developed new stuff to put down ? I doubt it.

Yes, I thought it was usual council excuses. To be honest I was shocked that the council didn't result to the new excuse of "Covid" - and having lack of staff available.
Incidentally, our street was only gritted because they couldn't get the Bin Collectors truck up. Otherwise, it would have been left.
I love Council book of excuses, over the years there's been "We've had a New Computer system", "Health & Safety Reasons" and now "Covid".
