A blue Suzuki Alto, A registration The Saint Pictured outside Saint's gaff last week: from Del I’d have kept quiet about that and made up a story about a 2.8 Granada like Gene.

Good point, 3L, I passed first time too, but I thought I’d failed before I left the test centre ... which probably helped the nerves! Quite impressed you both just knew off the top of your heads. I’m going to have to google them now! Ok, but you just wore a low cut top and a showed some leg didn’t you? Well it worked for me. No I did not, it was sodding February

I learned to drive and failed my first test in a mk1 Fiesta like the one below. I'd made the mistake of sending in my motorbike test and car test forms in at the same time with the result that I had both tests on the same day - and the same examiner! He passed me on my bike test in the morning but failed me on the car in the afternoon. Because I got a couple of Highway Code questions wrong on my bike test he decided to carry that over to the car test which tipped the balance between the pass and fail. My driving instructor was livid. The second test I took in my father's Renault 18, similar to the one below, and quite honestly he was a far better instructor than the tutor I'd paid for. The lessons that he gave stuck with me and I used his pointers when taking out our youngest in her car when she was learning to drive. She passed first time! Sam. Oh Sam :( what a crazily stressful day! And what a git he was. They’re completely different cars though! I know my instructor changed his car about 3 lessons in for me. I’m glad it wasn’t just before the test! I learned to drive in the depths of Cornwall where every few hundred metres there’s a double roundabout. No problem. Now when we go down there on holiday I hate them! I’ve learned more from my dad than my instructor, too, but not until I’d somehow passed said test. Dad’s reaction was “right, now that’s out the way, let’s teach you how you really drive!” :)

I passed second time in a Peugeot 309 similar to the one below, like most cars from this era, you very rarely see them nowadays and this was the last French car I drove.

The thing is even the most naff of old cars that make you cringe to admit having owned looks better than anything being produced now. Anything with a bloody straight line in it gets my vote .

I was seventeen at the time and didn't find the day particularly stressful as it was a day off of work and I had two return journeys through some of the Welsh valleys to Ammanford. They were great roads at the time for the bike ride and not too bad in the car despite it being a 1.1 Fiesta. Funny what you say about your dad's reaction, my father's words when I passed were "That's it you've passed your test, now the real learning starts!". Sam

Oh no! I'm a bit surprised that the same bloke was doing both different types of test on the same day! Also, the same name would presumably have given him an idea if he'd looked as his diary in advance. Never mind,eh. I can't imagine it has held you back! Sounds like a nice place to do your test. There were, as you can imagine, the most beautiful routes in Cornwall to practice driving in, but the actual test route is around Camborne, Pool and Redruth (if you don't know these areas by name, don't bother!) so they want you to stick to those areas in preparation for the test. Ha! Well, it's true isn't it. I mean who actually drives in the way we were taught? (There are a few of them and we are normally stuck behind them telling them they should learn to drive ).

I KNEW you would appear with a new Civic. I think of you every time I see one . But yes, you are right. Not really what I had in mind!
