I've just read something in another thread which made me think, even the seemingly mundane motors from yesteryear are probably much more interesting to look at than 90% of what graces our roads today. Also I think it was more common to learn in your parents' car than it is now (but that's based on my dad's experiences and he was born in '53 so before a lot of you were thought of!). I don't even know what I was driving (a smallish Vauxhall) but it was only 6 years ago and not at all interesting; I want to know what the rest of you got to learn to drive in!

A red Vauxhall Victor FE, WCE 810L, February to June ‘77. Passed first time!

A ford Sierra and a Ford Granada 2.8i Ghia X, though the Granada was automatic, I took my test in a manual motor.

Good point, 3L, I passed first time too, but I thought I’d failed before I left the test centre ... which probably helped the nerves!
Quite impressed you both just knew off the top of your heads. I’m going to have to google them now!

Did my first test in an Red Nissan Sunny saloon. Think it was an E plate. Failed for hesitating on a roundabout on the A20. Passed second time in a Citroen AX. The car was awkward for me as a learner as its a lot smaller than the Nissan Sunny I was used to.

I learned to drive and failed my first test in a mk1 Fiesta like the one below. I'd made the mistake of sending in my motorbike test and car test forms in at the same time with the result that I had both tests on the same day - and the same examiner! He passed me on my bike test in the morning but failed me on the car in the afternoon. Because I got a couple of Highway Code questions wrong on my bike test he decided to carry that over to the car test which tipped the balance between the pass and fail. My driving instructor was livid. The second test I took in my father's Renault 18, similar to the one below, and quite honestly he was a far better instructor than the tutor I'd paid for. The lessons that he gave stuck with me and I used his pointers when taking out our youngest in her car when she was learning to drive. She passed first time! Sam.

How did you test if you park like that in the middle of the road! Kids eh!
