It's been said that Abba are one of those bands that people do remember when they were kids, and probably like me dissmissed them as a "Girly group", but it was not until the last 10-15 years, the same people have thought "Yeah.......they were good!"
It's true the different songs evoke nostalgia of where you were, at the time, and one early memory is 2 girls in my primary school class about 1978, both singing on their skipping rope handles, as mics, pretending they were Freda and Agnetha, singing "Rich Mans world"!

Did the girls stand in front of a white background, back to back, and then have one turn around and look over their shoulder in a very sultry fashion? That was written into Law that every Abba video had to include those shots....

Followed it up with Arrival at the Easter holiday in 77, this came from Javelin records in prestwich. At school we had had a mastermind contest, I entered, my specialist subject being steam trains. I won it! The prize was a £3.00 record token, which then bought you an LP

I've got a few albums I listed too on repeat (back when they were available on CD that was)... But one of my all time favourites was the The - Soul Mining Admittedly before lyric sheets were available online I was probably singing some of the wrong words, but at least I sounded like I knew the words. One of the soundtracks of my youth, I actually found this album a few years after it was released but has been a constant return for regular plays, and very fond memories of university life cramming and finishing off my dissertation in the early 90's.

Misheard lyrics is a Thread on it's own! My Nan was singing "Super Trouper, Fog on the Tyne me" for years..... bless her.
A lot of Albums, in the Vinyl days used to often include additional artwork, possibly a booklet, and also the lyrics put in there too. Or if you were an avid Look-In reader, they would each week, have a card, poster and lyrics.

How my son can tell them by boiler / bogies / rivets and whistle I'll never know. My line is the old Diesels.
£3.00 for an Album..... That would be also from a "proper" record shop too.

Very true. I recall condemning them at every opportunity despite buying the Super Trouper album for Annie when it first came out. There are a lot of good quality tunes from them, some were over-hyped which I think was the main issue for me but one I do rate is: Sam.

I wish I'd had school friends to do that with! But they were all a bit non-plussed by the word ABBA. However, my brother is 7 years older than me and has always been obsessed with lighting (as you do) so he would set up "ABBA Discos" for me with whatever lights he had at the time. He now has his dream job of fixing streetlights which, as random as it may sound to the average person ... how many people do you know who do exactly what they always wanted to for a living?

He now has his dream job of fixing streetlights which, as random as it may sound to the average person ... how many people do you know who do exactly what they always wanted to for a living? I do, and my Brother did right up until his death at 37 - despite a very unhelpful Schools Career Advisor telling us (quote) "There was no chance we would get jobs in the Film Industry as we didn't live in the USA" and then went on to say "You'd both never get jobs in TV, the industry is knackered" and then "Get a Job in an Office or something"
5 years later, we both returned to the our old school, as it was used in an episode of "Peak Practice" that we happened to be both working on and went and found that said "advisor" and had a little word in his shell.... Thing is if you have an interest in something, and persue it - there is no reason why you can't earn a living out of it.
I work in Lighting - originally in the Theatre; and then somehow ended up in Central TV's film unit making Programmes for School & Colleges. My brother buggered off to "Starwars" & "Harry Potter" and the like.
Sure there's a moral there somewhere!
The kit they fit on street lamps always intrigues me. There was a lad in our school who liked and collected street lighting bits, his dad had a lamp post fitted by the council in his back garden. He even wrote to "Jim'll Fix it" asking to go and work with the Council - luckily for him, "Jim" didn't get back to him.
On the "Albums" thing - would I be considered as cheating if I said I could sing (just about) all of the lyrics to "Now that what I call Music 1"?
