I believe that the most vulnerable will be allowed to venture out for the first time since lockdown was introduced from August. Perhaps this new diktat about the masks being worn in shops is for their benefit?
Either way, I do wish they would give their rationale behind these decisions as the populous may be more inclined to stick to them rather than these seemingly random instructions.

Many people say they don't like being told what to do but I don't think that's true, not if you're confident in whomever it is doing the telling. If someone you respect & trust tells you to do something & explains why then you don't hesitate to do it. Long gone are the days when people put their trust in a politician or any public figure, this virus has brought home the depressing reality of that.

Who else is wearing a face covering on Tues, Wed or Thurs because they'll be obligatory on Fri? I wore a dust mask today in the supermarket for the first time because I thought it was absurd to wait till Friday if the advice is it may be better than no covering at all. None of the other shoppers were wearing one & I imagine they were looking at me thinking 'does he think it's Friday?' It's a no brainer Arthur
The rationale for making it mandatory in shops is to protect shop workers (disproportionately high rates of infection) and more vulnerable people in our society
Steve's right though - the communication has been terrible and consequently many people don't seem to undertand that it's the right thing to do irrespective of whether it's a Govt edict. It's just about being considerate to others.
The shortcomings of the Government have been horribly exposed during the entire crisis. Johnson is clueless.

Agree about the timing. It was the same the other way around as well, when they were removing restrictions and the police threatening action if you were out and about one minute ahead of the date. What possible difference could it make, just announce the change and get on with it. I suppose with the masks they could argue that people need to organise to get one, still they could have said wera one now and we'll enforce a week from now.

Since I started using the bus again a couple of weeks ago I have been wearing a face covering in all shops. Although they seem a bit uncomfortable at first you just get used to it after a while. The science on masks seems to have changed over recent weeks so it's probably better to wear them to protect others (mandatory of course from Friday). Sadly the UK always seems to behind most countries on this issue, as it has in general during the Covid crisis. Vi

..............I wasn't aware of the increase either and having just checked the last parcel that I sent on Monday which cost me £14.56, the same parcel today would be £18.68 and would be £3.50 more expensive than sending to Australia! Send it to me then Sam !

I had a package to send to the US today & as an online seller with a lot of US customers I was concerned that the postage had increased hugely, from £9.81 to £15.18 for a small parcel. Of course the royal mail never tells you about its price increases so I had to look into it & came across this article-
The price increase went into effect today in fact-
"Royal Mail have seen 95% less air passenger flights as a result of Covid-191 and are having to use air freight instead. This is considerably more expensive. It has led to a five-fold increase in conveyance costs to the US following the outbreak of Covid-19. As a business, Royal Mail say that they have absorbed these costs to date. But, from the 1st of July, they are going to recover their best estimate of future conveyance costs in this financial year".
I think the US is the only country to force this price increase as I checked & the cost of sending to other countries is the same. Diabolical liberty by the septics
In Australia our postal service has stopped quoting and delivering to some countries in Europe. Basicly we don't have the planes leaving from here so there is no point just having it sit at the post office until 2021.
In April and May sea mail was available. Gee I haven't used that for maybe 15 years !
For Australia to England our Aust. Post site states " There are flight disruptions and cancellations impacting all inbound and outbound items to United Kingdom. For items sent from the end of March to mid-May, additional delays have occurred of up to 2-4 weeks due to limited flights and government restrictions. Express items will be given priority over Standard items during this time. Australia Post has suspended Economy Services for parcels effective 3 April and until further notice. Economy Services for letters will continue."

None of the other shoppers were wearing one & I imagine they were looking at me thinking 'does he think it's Friday?' That's interesting. In Victoria (Aust.) we have been asked to wear face masks as Victoria is the only state that are having climbing virus figures again. Borders closed to all Victorians and you need to apply for a permit to leave Victoria to enter NSW or any other state.
I went food shopping tonight and everyone was wearing face masks; in the car park, the store, walking around etc. Me too. I have a couple of different sorts and that helps, to work out what is comfortable for you.
It depends on the town. I think I live in quite a conformist town but I have heard and seen people on ytub defying the police border crossings and demanding that they be allowed to cross. It is a weird situation when the whole country isn't affected. The Northern Territory, ACT, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia hasn't had a case for ages. Victoria had 300 today. That is why they introduced face masks as mandatory for Victorians.

I've been wearing one all through the pandemic when in busy places like supermarkets. Not bothered with one in local shops mind because social distancing isn't a problem with the odd punter in there at the same time.
