I have the sense that the series changed from series one which was often quite experimental.
Series two feels more formulaic. The plots often revolve around Budgie messing up a scheme and Charlie always coming out on top. More farce-based plots, more broad brush characterisation. Budgie is a bit more credulous. Charlie is less sinister and more of a bully. The police are often portrayed as stupid or comedic.
Even the Hazel/Budgie relationship seems to have degenerated into pretty much 100% acrimony.
All that said, there are still good moments and some of the charm of series one continues into series two, it's just that the overal quality levels have noticeably declined
All that said I still find things to enjoy in even the more rubbish episodes but I can also see why Adam Faith was not keen to continue in the role.

Doing some research today it was said that Adam Faith had a serious car accident after series two and wasn't keen on continuing any acting. The article did allude to a potential third series but gave no detail as to how advanced this notion was. It's pretty much my view that Budgie has showed differing angles thus far of the main characters but as you say L.E it's still very watchable.

I've also read the car accident was the reason why the series was discontinued. I've also come across references to Adam Faith's 1996 autobiography (Acts of Faith), which I've not read, but which apparently suggests that Adam felt the series had run its course and he wanted to continue his acting career via other projects.
Shortly after Budgie (and recovering from the accident), Adam Faith managed Leo Sayer. It was Adam Faith's idea to put Leo Sayer in a Pierrot outfit for his first appearance on Top Of The Pops. Apparently he thought Leo's looks might count against him! Although Adam Faith helped make Leo Sayer successful, he badly mishandled Leo's business affairs so that the millions he'd earned during the first 10 years were mostly lost through Adam Faith's dubious investments and business expenses.

This would tie in with Adam's Wogan appearance >>>HERE<<< where he discusses his dabbling in the city. I would be interested to have a read of his autobiography.

There was a musical version of Budgie in 1988 starring Faith as Budgie & Anita Dobson as, I think, Hazell, it ran for 3 months at the Cambridge Theatre London. A quote from the Encyclopedia Of Popular music calls it 'one of the most spectacular flop musicals in London during the late 80's'.
A clip of Anita Dobson singing a song from it on Live From The Palladium introduced by Tarby looking older than his 48 years-

The last episode I watched was The Jump Up Boys
I've seen this one maligned online but I thought it was enjoyable enough
As I observed in an earlier post, series two is a lot more broadbrush but there's still plenty to enjoy
Budgie and Grogan (from Out in series one) team up as Jump Up Boys - a twosome that follow a van and, when the delivery driver is out, try to nick the van and its contents
Inept policeman and a funny, if totally unbelievable, scene of Budgie and Grogan and the two coppers trying to nick them get drunk together.
I believe this story continues into the next episode - Our Story So Far...
3/5
Top triv - it was directed by Mike Newell who went on to have an illustrious career as a film director (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter, Donnie Brasco, Pushing Tin etc). Newell did six episode of Budgie in all....
- Run Rabbit, Run Rabbit, Run, Run, Run (1972) - Our Story So Far... (1972) - The Jump Up Boys (1972) - Sunset Mansions or Whatever Happened to Janey-Baib? (1971) - A Pair of Charlies (1971)

One other thing. I've really warmed to the "new" theme song for series two (written by Ray Davies triv fans)...
Cold Turkey - Nobody's Fool

I must admit I have too. The clips of the original for the ad caps works well too.

By the way, do you think that's Dave Davies singing Nobody's Fool? Sure sounds like it to me and would make perfect sense. And maybe Ray on backing vocals.

I assumed it was Dave Davies singing & certainly sounds like Ray Davies on backing vocals but having searched for a definitive answer it seems there's some debate over who it is. See the thread & youtube comments below-
As someone remarks in the yt comments to the video above, the opening guitar is taken from another Kinks song 'Animal Farm'. Funny but it reminds me of that old mobile phone ring tone.
