Thanks Arthur - that's all helpful and fascinating
Last night I watched Our Story So Far... which follows on from The Jump Up Boys
Probably the most comedic episode too far, which is generally a bad thing when it comes to Budgie as we lose subtlety and pathos
Although in amongst "the laughs" we had Hazell getting short changed and humiliated, again. Would she really stick with Budgie? I suppose some people do stay with their appalling partners
Most striking was the horrendous casual sexism and Irish stereotyping that was such a feature of the era and which I'm sure we all remember
By the standards of what's gone before it's a 2 out of five however I still found a lot to enjoy and remain addicted to the series
2/5

I liked the brief scene at the end of that episode where Budgie is shortchanged & gets a taste of his own medicine, Bird was pathetic & desperate there, refusing to recognise his own hypocrisy. The series needed more of that hard edge I think, but the writers were determined to take it down the comedy route.

I really like this single. The use of the riff from the album track sounds good here, it works sped up a little. It does indeed sound like a blend of Dave and Ray a is it a third person? Must keep a lookout for that single.
The mix of social values on offer are interesting to see and are valuable historical insight. The most concerning thing from then to me was the threats of /and violence used as a means to control women. Its hard to listen to and I remember the era being like that. Hopefully shows from other era's continue to be shown. Far better than trying to change the past as the Beeb does with it's cuts even to dvd releases. TPTV as discussed before cover this by giving the warnings.

I've got a couple more episodes in...
Do Me A Favour
Good to see a young Derek Jacobi playing Hazel's naive, provincial cousin who wants to experience the seamy side of Soho. Some great location footage of early 70s Soho elevate these scenes
Meanwhile Charlie wants Budgie to break into a flat to steal some high end erotic art
It's all good fun and an enjoyable episode. Jacobi is great.
4/5
Glory of Fulham
Budgie nicks a greyhound but when he tries to offload it things are not so straightforward
The first third is one long scene with Budgie and Hazel doing what they do best - arguing. It's actually quite hard work, and the episode doesn't really improve as the idea is too thin to work over an entire episode
Budgie finally gets Charlie involved and things go from bad to worse.
It's all just about watchable but a far cry from the dizzy heights this series can, and has, reached
2/5

The last episode I watched was...
Twenty-Four Thousand Ball Point Pens
Something of a return to form after Glory of Fulham. A tightly plotted episode in which Budgie’s best mate (strange we’ve never met him before) Inky Ballantine (Kenneth Cranham in great form) gets Budgie involved in buying and selling. For a while it looks as though Budgie and Inky can’t fail but, well, you know how it goes in Budgie. Hazel also gets short shrift and Charlie is quids in. Of course.
Christopher Benjamin and Alfie Bass also feature in a fun episode

I've decided to give Budgie a break and watch the remainder over Christmas. That way I'll have something decent to watch over a beer

I've got five left to go - it's gonna be a sad moment when I've got no more new ones left to watch

I agree. The series has been the best thing I've seen this year.

Enjoying the final episode on TPTV right now too. I've really enjoyed this over the autumn too and as LE said it's been the best thing on the box for a fair while for me too. I'll try and get back into the reviews again probably with Xmas it'll be the new year need to watch the episodes again to get the feel of them. Probably the two series were about right for this and Budgie's character certainly provided the impetus for thing's that followed on too. Nice one Budge!

I wondered what had happened to your episode by episode dissections - it's good to know you stuck with the series all the way to the end
