I can't find a thread for classic TV themes
So, what are yours?
I was just playing The Professionals theme and marvelling at it
Other favourites...
Ski Sunday The Sweeney (of course) The Avengers The Prisoner The Saint The Big Match

Some crackers there Sparky
Ace of Wands is wonderful
For some reason that makes me think of Magpie
You're absolutely right to specify the 70s Big Match theme
World of Sport also a bona fide classic

Have you ever heard....
Keith Mansfield with KPM All Stars - UK Sports Theme Medley: Theme from 'The Big Match' / Theme from BBC Wimbledon Tennis / Theme from BBC Athletics / Theme from 'Grandstand'
...live at the Jazz Cafe in Camden?
I've got the album with it on. I loves it.
I'd love to have been there - the roars of appreciation from the crowd as a new theme comes in are wonderful

And, in a similar vein, here are the KPM All Stars doing the Grandstand theme live at Islington Town Hall in 2012
Really tear in the eye stuff
The line up includes Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, James Clarke, Duncan Lamont and Brian Bennett
Great to see them getting a bit of acclaim for their incredible work
^ According to one of the YouTube comments under that video...
I was there that night (upstairs), as well. Brilliant. I wish you didn't edit your video clip too soon at the end of this one. The crowds applause and appreciation for this extended finale of Grandstand by Keith Mansfield was memorable. You should of kept the cheers from the crowd intact. For those who weren't there, the crowds response was so overwhelming, that the compere asked keith Mansfield if he would play it again for us. Keith and the band played a shortened version for us again.
The person who posted the video explained that his phone ran out of memory which is why it ends quite abruptly at the end of the song

Great stuff lads. I very much enjoyed listening to those classic themes.
I wouldn't mind getting hold of the album. I will look it up later.
Charles.

Ace of Wands was written, recorded and sung by Andy Bown - Keyboard Player in Satus Quo - and a good mate of Trevor Preston (who created the series) As I'm sure you will know, Magpie was recorded by Steve Winwood.
I can remember a couple of version of Big Match - there was a version from around 1972 (I'll get back to you on the title) which was OK, but I much preferred the version that is more widely known from the 70s.
For me - ITV Sport always seemed to be just one step ahead of the BBC when it came to many of the their sports themes. Midweek Sport Special from the mid 1980s was also a fave too. I think Jeff Wayne had something to do with that one.
Mind you - Grandstand is perhaps the finest and Sportsnight was also a favourite of mine.
I have never heard the gig at Jazz Cafe - would have loved to have seen this.
On a similar note (excuse pun) The BBC Radiophonic Workshop did a live show at the Roundhouse in 2009 - featuring most of the Dr Who stuff. But, they ended with this little Gem from Schools TV - "Words and Pictures" - I'd have paid just to hear that!!!

That's a great clip Spark - thanks This is not an absolute favourite but I do quite like..... ....Roobarb and Custard
And of course, who can forget the sound of Sunday tea time....
The Adventures of Black Beauty (or was it The New Adventures of Black Beauty)....
They're flooding back now. Man Alive is a corker....
And lest we forget.... The South Bank Show....
Possibly the best of the lot (and I know that's saying something) but Sunday afternoons (in London at least) and straight after the Big Match it was straight into.... The Persuaders
Standby for action
We're about to launch Stingray..... Anything can happen in the next half hour Right I need to get on. Sorry for so many posts but I just had to get them out of my head

I can't believe no one has mentioned The Banana Splits theme tune yet, absolute classic! I like just about every TV theme from the 70's including:
Rising Damp The Fall & Rise Of Reginald Perrin Crossroads The Wombles The Hanged Man Rainbow Mr Benn Six Million Dollar Man (naturally) Starsky & Hutch The A Team (bit of 80's) Hill Street Blues (more 80's) Auf Wiedersehen Pet (and again) Hawaii 5-0 Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads On The Buses Minder Regan
Nor sure if some of those count as there are lyrics and not just a composition but I could go on (no, really I could), some edited highlights you might say.
