This stuff never seems to stand still long enough to standardise. I haven't bothered with the 4k gear which has been out a few years and is now fairly reasonable pricewise and yet before broadcasting has really caught up 8k is on the horizon. They are currently about 2 grand a go but the thing is why would you buy one yet? I suppose upscaling is a feature on these but its not going to be anytime soon that much 8k content is around. Me neither Del, I've still got a decade old set which (touch wood) is still doing the job... personally I think 4K, Ultra HD etc. will go the way of 3D from a few years back feels a bit gimmicky a bit what's coming next as you say! As the broadcast technology develops there will always be ongoing developments offered to the buying public but it is the public ultimately that decide whether the technology is successful. I certainly didn't bother with 3D TV as I didn't think it practical in the standard living room with people viewing from differing angles. I bought a 1080p HD TV about 12 years ago when our CRT TV died but when the picture started to deteriorate on that three and a half years ago I bought a 4k smart TV as a replacement. It has to be said that the picture quality with proper 4k (not upscaled) content is stunning. As regards 8k I don't see that as a significant enough step forward to warrant an upgrade from 4k but who knows, if the 4k TV gives up the ghost then maybe the 8k would be on the cards but I would hope to get a good few more years service from it before that happens and in the meantime maybe the prices of 8k will improve. Sam.

You're the only person I know who has a 4k set Sam. Have you seen any classic tv available on 1080 remastered Bluray upscaled on your set? If so how does that fare?

Have you seen any classic tv available on 1080 remastered Bluray upscaled on your set? The only one I have that falls into that select category is "The Italian Job". Yes it looked good but I don't rate upscaling anyway as it is just a compromise, a best-guess at what the pixels may or may not be. At the end of the day it is just a telly that gets used to watch all definitions, all aspect ratios, from all manner of sources be they DVD, Blu-ray, video server, or broadcast TV. The fact that it is 4k just gives a bit extra flexibility and future-proofing (at the time) for when more 4k became available. Virgin media have a 4k channel but I've only seen it a few times. There are plenty of 4k clips on Youtube but I've only watched a handful. As I mentioned previously the full 4k picture can be stunning but I don't make a conscious effort to test the different functions and capabilities, I just put on what I want to watch irrespective of the technology as long as the technology gives the best picture possible from the source. Sam.

Found this on Youtube. My apologies about the annoying presenter. This explains a bit about the remaster of a Wham music video.
Video topic aside, but it explains how it was upscaled to 4k.

You're the only person I know who has a 4k set Sam. Have you seen any classic tv available on 1080 remastered Bluray upscaled on your set? If so how does that fare? I’ve got a 4K del, last week I put the Sweeney on, normal dvd, the digital remastered one. The picture quality was good, now there’s two settings in my tv, picture settings. The first is ‘ digital clean view’. When this is enabled it reduces picture noise to reduce flickering. This made the quality of dvd, especially faces, unbelievably better!.. then the other setting called ‘auto motion plus’ thus when enabled it enhances the picture sharpness on fast moving images and gets rid of blur and judder, so whilst the edges of the cars on the body work looked clearer and sharper! It was just to much lol and it made the car scenes/ chases in one respect faster and sharper when going around corners, but it was over kill and made it look like it was on fast forward! It’s hard to explain, but it also took away the originality of the Sweeney and made it appear to modern as if it was actually live and filmed in 2020 or like it was a home made video! So I just compromised and just had the ‘digital clean view’ setting on! And also to be honest In my opinion it was probably almost as good as the Blu Ray version of the Sweeney, except for just one thing, it was lacking in the richer and more vibrant colours! You get with the Blu Ray version! But that didn’t bother me personally because, even though most will disagree on here, It meant that I was able to not have to endure the ‘ black bars’ down the side like blue Ray version, Because you can’t remove on Blu-ray format if the contents are filmed in 4.3 even though this is the original format! when it was done in the 70s! Anyway I don’t think 8k will take off, for one I don’t think they will be a lot of tv content compatibility, sold in the shops! Plus unless one sits so close to the tv the human eye can’t distinguish the upgrade that good! and lastly the greater stuff is enhanced the faker it looks! And certainly wouldn’t suit retro tele program’s especially like the Sweeney! So I’ve come to the conclusion the get the best picture qual’ when watching the Sweeney! Buy a 4K tv and just tweak’ the settings!

Very interesting video, Sparky! I don't miss much about lockdown & being Furloughed but I do miss having the time to read through the forum all the time! Well, I quite like thinking about how all those people with a mountain of toilet roll, rice and pasta are going to shift it now its not in short supply and hasn't been for quite a while!

Very true! And hand sanitiser. The only thing I still cannot get for love nor money is flour! Which is a complete pain because one of my favourite distractions is baking a cake. I genuinely haven't seen a bag of flour in a shop since February (when I didn't need any)!
