European cinema can be interesting, one very good French film was Wages of Fear, staring Yves Montand, I think it was made in about 1953. Another was The Train, which was a French/American production, Burt Lancaster was in it and it was directed by John Frankenheimer, made in 1964, in black and white and shot on location in France

Get Carter Villain Le Mans The Long Good Friday Dirty Harry (I notice a pattern forming, funny that! ) Other contenders for me - The Offence, Sleuth, The French Connection, Jaws, Close Encounters Of The First Kind, The Duellists (Ridley Scott's first proper film from 1977), plus any number of long lost cult Italian crime or Giallo films from the '70s. The 70s were, in my opinion, the best ever decade for films, although most of the greats were American, sadly. It was an era when directors had more control over the creative process than ever and were pretty fearless, producing some ground breaking stuff.
Heres my top 5 list:
Badlands (1973)
Taxi Driver (1976)
The French Connection (1971)
Get Carter (1971) - the only British entry
Mean Streets (1973)
It's hard to just pick five films. Good thread. I've seen 'Mean Streets', that's not a film often picked, very good film.

Brilliant film that influenced 'Hell Drivers'. Les Diaboliques is another classic by the same director. Another great French film people might want to track down is 'Le Trou' ( The Hole ), the best prison escape film I've seen, though to go back to the 70s 'Escape From Alcatraz' is another excellent film. Saw 'Rocky' the other day on tv, Stallone made a few decent films in the 70s like 'FIST' & 'Paradise Alley'. 'Figures In A Landscape' is an interesting British film from 1970 featuring Robert Shaw & Malcolm McDowell as two men on the run pursued by armed men in a helicopter. 'Fragment Of Fear' from 1970 starring David Hemmings is a favourite. Many great films made in Australia in the 70s, 'Walkabout', 'Picnic At Hanging Rock', 'The Chant Of Jimmie Blacksmith', 'Money Movers', 'Wake In Fright', 'The Last Wave'. 'A Fistful Of Dynamite' from 1971, one of the great Italian westerns. 'Charley Varrick', another excellent Don Siegel film.
