Enjoyable enough police action series based on a Flying Squad team in the '90s. Creator Roy Mitchell did his research into how the real-life Sweeney operated in that period and he put it into good effect for this show. The pilot episode was a gripping, tough thriller with Robert Reynolds as the leader, DI Mickey Dawes then in the series, Reece Dinsdale replaced him as Charlie Scott. He wasn't bad, but perhaps Sean Pertwee or Vincent Regan would have been a better choice as the DI. The 3rd series which didn't feature Dinsdale and a few other original cast members was disappointing with the stories becoming more soapy and comic book-like.
Some excellent action sequences in this series.

Suppose this should get a DVD release. Not on a par with The Sweeney by any means and some of it is a bit wooden at times but a fairly decent 90's cop drama and seen much worse than this over the years too... would sooner watch Thief Takers any day than the ---- crop of period drama we're getting at the moment.

At least it was better than The Bill at that time which was by now a harmless 8pm soap opera, churned out thrice/4 times weekly and not at all like the way it began as a tough 9pm drama back in '84. I'll admit that some of the Thief Takers villains were very cartoony and at times OTT, but that didn't detract from the entertainment factor and the stunts were awesome. How many other British cop shows of the time could you say that about? To make it more authentic, it needed to be more like Flying Squad, the 1989 Thames TV documentary that pulled no punches in its gritty camerawork and even footage was shot of a robber killed in the line of duty.
