Are there any presenters today that could do such a series some justice?
Think back to the likes of late 70's early 80's and there were many: Jim Bowen, Roy Walker, Norman Vaughn, Charlie Williams, Brucie, Tarby, plus many more. Are there any such characters today? It seems that the likes of those mentioned, plus Keith Lemmon too don't forget, that they have managed to elevate bellendery (Is that a word? It is now!) to a whole new level.
After those mentioned I think we're only left with Alexander Armstrong and Bradley Walsh - and they're not recommendations either.
Sam.

Couldn't agree more.
And yes. Bellendery is a word that first entered the dictionary about 4 years ago following perfect examples being found on a now defunct TV forum.

I used to like Name That Tune. There's a very small pool of presenters these days, in which I wish Dermot Oleary would stay down for a third time.

Most of the presenters mentioned by Sam were what I call "all rounders", people who had spent their careers in front of a live audience, dealing with Hecklers, Members of the Public and "flannelling" when things go wrong - from Butlins Redcoats, the Northern Clubs to Variety shows in theatres.
In my opinion, that's why those presenters made such a mark on a Game or Variety show. The key is to have someone that is good with all kinds of people - and the unexpected. It makes the show.
We don't seem to have that calibre of presenter today - they all seem to just appear via some 'phone to vote talent contest' - or totally steal the camera time and show to give them as much exposure as possible. Besides, they all need to "look the part" too.
Saying that - I always found some of the exchanges between Nicholas Parsons on "Sale of the Century" quite amusing; he could be quite rude to contestants. But again - Parsons seemed to be one of those "Marmite" presenters. But - he was present on "Sale...." for 13 series.
Leslie Crowther was great on "Price is Right". Micheal Crawford was considered for that originally; though turned it down to do "Barnum" in the West End.
Never thought much of Max Bygraves on "Family Fortunes" though.

Yes, I liked Nicholas Parsons too. Brucie was good at what he did, but I could find him annoying at times, Tarby, I’m afraid, is room 101 material in my opinion. One presenter I did like was Larry Grayson, I preferred him to Brucie on the Generation Game, he was one of those people I just found very funny even if he wasn’t doing anything much.

Tarby, I think was one of those suited to certain things - compere of a live variety show I always thought he was OK at; not as good as Brucie. He never could seem to get that banter between him and the contestants. Though, talking to a live audience, I always thought he was pretty good.
Winner Takes All always seemed a bit flat to me; did they replace Tarby at some point in the 80s with Geoff Wheeler?
Ted Rogers I always found a little too quirky too - and out of place; esp when 321 had straight laced, middle class couples from Kent as contestants.
Both Wogan and Les Dawson - I think had Blankety Blank nailed - and made their own mark on the show.
Anyone remember Lenny Bennet and "Punchlines". Or Paul Daniels on "Every Second Counts"
For me - If not Jim Bowen - either Les Dawson, Lenny Bennet or Ted Rogers could have easily adapted to present "Bully" - though they all come from that same stable of comedians.

Some interesting points raised here by all, I remember pretty much all those game shows and the presenters. I agree Winner takes all seemed a bit flat, and yeah I remember Lenny Bennett, not sure he did as much as the others mentioned but I believe he did stand up comedy round the club circuit. Surprised nobody's mentioned another; Bob Monkhouse on Family Fortunes (Our survey said?) And the X appearing with the "eck ork"! sound with a wrong answer. Anyone remember another? Gambit which I think had The chap from How! (Ridiculously I can't think of his name at the moment!)

One of my brothers used to be a journalist, he once interviewed Jim Bowen at his home, a converted railway station which had an indoor swimming pool, he told me that Bowen said to him 'not bad for an ex school teacher is it?'. The interview was part of a job he did for Youth Hostels, another celeb he visited was Bill Waddington who played Percy Sugden in Coronation Street, he gave my brother a signed Coronation Street script I remember.
Lennie Bennett was on tv recently, one of those 'Worst Of Bad TV' shows, they'd dug out an TSW show he hosted ( see clip below ) & he was ripped to shreds. In fact he was a very good host on 'Lucky Ladders'. In later years he owned a fast food outlet called 'Fat Bastards' on Blackpool's Golden Mile. Is it just me or is Bennett like a cross between John Thaw & Keith Harris?
