I prefer the 3 myself, the mark 4 was dreadful, a lump of a thing.

The mark 3 was a nice job too. The 4 was a bit of a failure really, it had some strange rear suspension set up which could cause it to lose control on corners. The police got some when they first came out but they didn't have them long due to this problem

Yes the MK3 Zephyr/Zodiac was nicely proportioned as was the MK2 but the MK4 had a flaw with the styling; they should have moved its passenger cabin forward so it had a longer boot and shorter bonnet and you'd have probably still got the 3 litre Essex engine in. Then it would have seemed better proportioned like the MK2 Cortina. Early styling full size clays of the MK4 big Ford looked even more American and like smaller Lincolns interestingly.

I seem to remember the mark 4 Zephyr having the spare wheel in front of the engine, under the bonnet. It was only the arrival of the Granada in 72 which got Ford's big car sales going again

Here's a couple of Zodiacs from the 2018 Isle Of Wight show, both with island registrations, and yes Carty you are correct about the spare wheel under the bonnet. Hopefully the show will be on again this year so fingers crossed I'll be back there. Sam.

I had a day off work today as I had to go to Macclesfield for some stuff for my lads return to school. On the way I saw a superb mark 1 Lotus Cortina, in the usual off white with green band.

The Mk4 Zodiac wasn't around long was it ? The Consul /Granada was better in every way. I never knew the Zodiac had the wheel under the bonnet. Would think the heat wouldn't be great for the rubber .

Well, about 6 years. Yes, it outclassed by the next generation. It was a real oddity in design, a bit like the Scorpio that ended it all.

The shortest lived big Ford was the mark 3 Zephyr/Zodiac, only made from 62-66, the other three variants were all in production for 6 years, mark 1 1950-6, mark 2 1956-62 and mark 4 1966-72.
