It's not possible to fault the original by Jon & Vangelis, but Donna Summer takes "State Of Independence" to a different level entirely The original :- Donna's cover version :- Good call Windy, the original is brilliant but Donna Summer's version is outstanding. She could belt out a good tune IMHO. Sam.

Driving back from mid Wales this evening I heard Radio 2's Bob Harris playing 'The Wild Side of Life', which was made famous by country music singer Hank Thompson. It topped the US country chart for 15 weeks back in 1952, although Jimmy Heap first recorded it without success. There have been several cover versions of the song over the years but Status Quo's rock version is probably the best and most well-known.

Got to agree with you there Vienna. The Mighty Quo's version is by far the best! Steed

A couple of covers of Nancy Sinatra songs I like, one of which I listened to this morning. First is Primal Scream's cover of 'Some Velvet Morning' with (like her or loathe her) Kate Moss from 2003. I like the earlier version from 2002's Evil Heat slightly more and seems weird thinking of it as being 20 years old now. Now you'll probably want this in the 'what were they thinking' category but I've always liked the Audio Bullys sort of cover/mash up of 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)'/'Shot You Down' from 2005, again it's one I like and worked well at the time.

I quite like this cover of Souxsie and the Banshees Slowdive by LCD Soundsystem from a few years back.

Linda Ronstadts cover of Tumbling Dice I think is a decent effort I first heard the song in the 1978 film "FM" and thought it was a Ronstadt original. Her version is still my favourite.

I love the Doobie Brothers version of 'What a Fool Believes' but the Aretha Franklin take on it is out of this world...!!!

'You Might Need Somebody' is one of my all-time favourite songs. American singer Turley Richards recorded the original back in 1979 - but it failed to make an impression on the UK and US charts. However, Randy Crawford recorded a great cover and it reached No.11 in the UK in 1981... I also like Shola Ama's 1997 version and it did even better, reaching No.4 Vi
