Kim Wilde Chequered love* Kim Wilde was really on a roll in 1981. Agree with all your * selections, Carty. Perhaps controversially, I think Duran Duran's debut Planet Earth was brilliant and they just went downhill from there (with the exception of Girls on Film). But what do I know? The record buying public obviously didn't have the same opinon.

Memory of this month was a week in Norfolk and a trip to a car show, in my trusty old Austin, with many of these on the radio

September
Adam and the Ants Prince charming* passable I suppose Ottawan Hands up give me your heart* OMD souvenir* Cliff Richard Wired for sound* the last decent thing he did, the end of his late 70s good spell Diana Ross and Lionel Richie Endless love. Not really Genesis Abacab. Not a fan of theirs, sorry The Tweets The birdie song. No comment necessary, apart from why did 1981 have the two worst songs of all time? Godley and Creme Under your thumb* Dollar Hand held in black and white* I thought a well produced record, and...Therese Bazar..😍 Stevie wonder Happy birthday. Not keen Depeche Mode Just can't get enough* Madness Shut up. Started brilliantly in 79/80 but, IMO, faded out Rex Smith and Rachel Sweet Everlasting love* cover of a late 60s song, decent effort. I thought she was quite a good singer and didn't get the success she deserved

I'd actually forgotten what a great year for music this was. Some great memories too. About 5 trips to London, a decent summer etc Cliff Richard Wired for sound* the last decent thing he did, the end of his late 70s good spell A girlfriend at the time had a lovely singing voice, but would hopelessly get lyrics wrong and would put up a fierce argument if corrected. So Cliff's lyrics, according to her, were:- "AM, FM, I feel so elastic Now, it's music I've found And I'm quiet for sound.."You don't argue with a Yorkshire lass.

Laurie Anderson O Superman. A contender for the worst record of the year IMO Squeeze Labelled with love* love this I love everything Squeeze did, particularly Chris Difford's cheeky lyrics and dodgy rhymes ("Sod all/Bottle"). One of the great storytelling songs. You can picture the old dear in a rocking chair reminiscing about eloping with an American during the war. Pure class. As for Rod, this one just seemed like he was trying to replicate "D'yah Think I'm Sexy"... and failing. Laurie Anderson - I'll never understand in a million years the appeal of this song.
