Two others from that summer which I remember hearing a lot at the time, and always bring the memories alive are Life's Been Good by Joe Walsh and Because the night by The Patti Smith group Oh yes, the extended version of the Joe Walsh track with the laid back bluesy guitar solo. It featured in the 1978 film "FM" staring Michael Brandon as a rebel DJ on a rock station. The plot was a little weak but it was more of an excuse to showcase a bunch of artists who probably had some connection to the film company - Steely Dan, REO Speedwagon, Linda Rondstadt, Tom Petty etc. Interesting to hear you mention "Sunburn' by Graham Gouldman which I remember from the summer of 79 and my first venture into the world of work. It seemed to be played a lot but never charted IIRC and very few people seem to remember it. On the subject of one hit wonders of the time, "She's Gonna Win" by Bilbo always brings back fond memories of 1978.

Thanks again, Nightfly, I've found the Tony Burrows track on you tube so I've downloaded it onto my 1976 playlist. Again, thanks for reading through this long thread and checking this out.
I liked the Graham Gouldman track from 79, I think it was from a film of the same name, Farrah Fawcett was in it, from memory.

In case anyone doesn't already know, Tony Burrows was a top session singer on hits like "Beach Baby" by First Class, White Plains, Eddison Lighthouse and the original line up of The Brotherhood of Man. I believe he once appeared twice on the same edition of TOTP fronting Eddison Lighthouse for "Love Grows" and Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand".

I left off this listing at the end of 1980, as my interest in the charts did start to diminish as the 80s progressed, but, thinking about it, I did still follow them up to about the rail end of 83 and there was some good stuff still about in those first three years of the 80s, before it did really start to unravel. As a result, I'm going to resurrect it and do 81-3. Here goes, starting with January 1981. As before, ones I like I've marked *
John Lennon Imagine. Sorry, not really keen. A lot of Lennons stuff got 're released just after his death, but this one I don't care for Adam and the Ants Antmusic. Wasn't a huge fan but this was ok ish John Lennon Woman* love this Phil Collins In the air tonight* not a Collins fan, but like this one Chas and Dave Rabbit. Not really Boomtown Rats Banana republic* Blondie Rapture* love this, about the end of their great 1978-81 run Ultravox Vienna* brilliant record. I won't mention the abomination which kept it off the top! Spandau Ballet To cut a long story short* Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet* absolutely love this too
The month I turned 21, a few memories were this girl from Davenport, Stockport called Pamela who I met at a Christmas party in December 1980 and went out with a few times, listening to quite a few of these while driving her in my Austin A40!
Happy days

Let's get February done too.. Glad to see a return of this topic! I turned 18 in Feb 1981. Did I spend money on a lavish party to celebrate a milestone birthday? Nah - I bought a bad-ass Akai reel to reel tape machine to record the charts instead and most of the tracks you list are probably on my old reels (which I don't have anything to play them on anymore). I remember enjoying my first legal pint to The Teardrop Explodes on the pub jukebox and was glad to hear it feature in Ashes to Ashes. Coast to Coast and Phil Collins were great tracks, but as the pub was frequented by a lot of young lads in local new wave bands, your street cred would vanish if you dared select them on the jukebox, so you just hoped someone else would put them on. Chas and Dave would have got you a lifetime ban.

April.
Bucks Fizz Making your mind up* Euro winner that year, a bit guilty I know!! Graham Bonnet Night games* Starsound Stars on 45 Not sure if I liked this or not. It kicked off a brief craze for these medley records Madness Grey day. I like madness but, to me their later stuff got a bit bland after their brilliant ska sound on their early days Department S Is Vic there* one hit wonder? Bowie Up the hill backwards
Noticeably shorter lists than the previous years

And finally for tonight May. A memory of May 1981 was going to a wedding reception for a girl at work at the Four Seasons in Hale Barns and driving about 4 people home, all over Manchester in my old Austin, getting back at about 3 in the morning, we all descended on the Valley Lodge in Wilmslow on the way back, great night!
Shakin Stevens You drive me crazy* I didn't mind this one Kim Wilde Chequered love* Ten Pole Tudor Swords of a thousand men* love this one REO Speedwagon Keep on loving you* Quincy Jones Ai no corrida* Kim Carnes Bette Davies eyes* love this too Sheena Easton When he shines. She was briefly big and did one of two I liked, but I thought this was awful Human League Sound of the crowd*
