Does anyone remember this oddity? It seemed to be something from the fairly early days of the chart and was, apparantly, quite common in the 50s and early 60s, but it seemed to persist into the 70s as I remember one or two examples.
Una Paloma Blanca, 1975 - George Baker Selection and Jonathan King.
Lets Twist Again, again 1975, a reissue of the original by Chubby Checker and another recording by, I think he was called John Asher
Don't Leave me this way, 1977 - Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes and Thelma Houston
Blame it on the Boogie, 1978 - The Jacksons and also Mick Jackson (not related)
I think that was the last time it happened, but cant be sure.

Michelle (Beatles) by both The Overlanders & David and Jonathon in January 66.
I'm sure The Unchained Melody was represented 3 times in the same month in 1955 by Jimmy Young, Al Hibbler & Les Baxter.
I'm sure there are more...

I think that was the last time it happened, but cant be sure. I remember the two above being in the charts at the same time but it wasn't the last time it happened.
Although both were covers of the original, Billy Idol and Amazulu were in the charts at the same time with "Mony Mony" in late '87. I remember it at the time because I had a couple of Billy Idol albums and 'appreciated' his live version, but didn't like Amazulu's version which wasn't a success for them anyway.
Another one that I'm not sure of but think that there may have been an overlap was when Wonderwall by Oasis was covered by Mike Flowers. If they weren't in the charts at the same time then it was very close.

Alexandra Burke and Jeff Buckley were number one and two respectively, with 'Hallelujah' in 2008. Leonard Cohen's original version was in the same chart at no.36.

Not sure that they were in the charts at the same time but the song "Iko Iko Iko" was in the charts the same year in 1982, firstly with Natasha England and then with The Belle Stars in June/July that year. But I can't get any info on when the Natasha one was in the charts. I'm sure someone on here would know.

Good call Gerry.
According to everyhit.com Natasha reached no.10 in June'82 and the Belle Stars only reached no.35 the same month.
I must admit that I don't remember Natasha at all as the Belle Stars version had far more air time, probably thanks to it being used in the opening scenes to 'Rainman'.

Not quite the same song but same title was Crazy by both Patsy Cline and Seal which were in the Top 20 in December 1990. www.everyhit.com/searchsec.php

Yeah afraid so Sam. She advertises Slim Fast now... as if she uses that 'product' to lose weight.
