So - we have the "threat" of power shortages through Christmas, as a well as a fuel shortage - will it be 3 day week next then? Just like the back end of 1973.....
Over you you Gene & Sam! Power shortages? They couldn't come at a better time: Sam.

.... but without Bolan and Bowie as a soundtrack. A winter of discontent to the soundscape of Ed Sheeran. Joy of joys... So it begs the question - which were the worst winters in British history ? 1947, 1963, 1973, 1978... or Mike and Bernie ?

I just about remember 1963, as a 3 year old I thought the snow was great!
1978/9 was very cold, there was also a couple of bad ones in the 80s and 90s, 1987 and 1995 I think.
Dad said 1940 was very cold as well.

I know 47 was bad from reports I've heard from elder family members over the years. I personally remember the gales and freezing fog in January 79. I had to go out with my Dad one night to batten the hatches on a building site he was running. No H&S back in those days so no need for me to have a CSCS card to get on site!
I also remember us having a blanket of snow on the ground on June 2nd of 1976. This didn't last too long though before we went on to one of the hotest spells on record.
Gene.

1978/79 was a bad one, I think 1981 into 1982 wasn't far behind either.
For me, it's the winter of 1990. At the time we lived in Derbyshire; it snowed quite heavily, much more than usual.
Electricity was off for a week. I managed to rig up a battery/inverter to power a B&W portable TV - which was a waste of time as the local Transmitter was off air, due to lack of electricity. I managed to get a radio fired up though.
I saw a Central TV staff newspaper some years back - they had a feature in there about the 1963 winter, and how ATV opened up it's studios at Borehamwood to anyone who was stuck/trapped and laid on food via the canteen and even provided heated spaces as a makeshift schoolroom for those schools with no heating. They had Arthur Askey and Des O'Connor serving soup and hot drinks at the canteen working shifts with other Celebs of the time.
No one was stockpiling Pasta / Bog Roll or Fuel either....

Is it the Sweeney "I want the man" episode that has one scene with the freak snow storm of June/July 1975 in?

Yes, I remember a lot of snow on the ground in 78/79 and going out to get photos of it. 81 was not quite as bad. The next worst would be early 2003 when people were stuck on the M11.

Yes 81/2 was bad. I remember ice on the ground for ages, I was using the train from Radcliffe to Manchester Victoria at the time and it was a mess to walk to the station on.
