Although I have never seen a Star Wars film, I know this one is a classic The Saint

The more I've thought about this thread the harder it is to select more. There's been so many themes over the years that can be attributed to the great of the genre.
Elmer Bernstein, Henry Mancini, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and John Barry to name but a few, I'm going to have to get selective...

A great British film from 1970 is 'The Blood On Satan's Claw' & the whole soundtrack is superb. A little known and unusual instrument called an Ondes Martenot, similar to a Theremin, is used in the main theme & throughout the film. The Australian composer Marc Wilkinson used it in a few films he scored including a short film for tv called 'The Return' which I mention because I thought it might be of interest as it stars Peter Vaughan. The second vid shows the Ondes Martenot & how it's played.

Agree with many on here, although some I'm not familiar with, but one I've always liked and not got a mentioned is the theme from "Gold" 1974 film starring Roger Moore about a Gold mine disaster done deliberately to control the price of gold, theme was another from Elmer Bernstein and sang by Jimmy Helms

I know I am biased but I do like this one, especially the part from 2'55" where it goes freestyle. This is the longer version as featured on Shut It! The Music Of The Sweeney but was used as the theme for The Sweeney! Does anyone else say "The Sweeney" repetitively to themselves while listening to this?

The closing titles are the best thing about 'Gold' with its powerful theme song belted out by Jimmy Helms. I looked at his wikipedia page & he was part of Londonbeat who you may remember had the 80's chart hit "I've Been Thinking About You".
Like it when the menacing strings come in ( 33 secs in ) on 'Regan's Theme'. Similar tune to Roy Budd's 'Who Dares Wins'. Not sure about the saxophone, etc., think it needed to be harder sounding! I remember the composer for many Hammer films, James Bernard, talking on a documentary about how he would create themes by using the syllables of the film's title, eg. Dra-cu-la, da da dum, Dra-cu-la. As simplistic as it sounds I expect this is a common starting point that composers use when writing a theme. The theme to The Sweeney tv show is the same- 'da da da, da da da'- 'The-Swee-ney, The-Swee-ney'.

Weirdly enough ( after Steve's post ) I was going to add this a few days ago, 'Regan's Theme' by Ennio Morricone from the unjustly maligned 'Exorcist 2: The Heretic'. I'd never seen the film until recently, critics would have you believe that it's one of the 'worst films ever made' & predictably it has a very low score on the imdb ( 3.8 ) but in fact it's a fascinating film with some stunning visuals & this theme by Morricone ranks as one of his best imo. 'Orca' is another film that gets a slagging for being a 'Jaws' rip off, but Morricone's beautiful music makes the unlikely story of a killer whale seeking revenge for the slaughter of his mate & unborn calf genuinely moving.

Here's the closing theme from Heat possibly one of Moby's acoustic best!
