Sadly this has been happening for some time. A few months ago I saw a report that three Cortinas were stolen in one night from Kent and a low-loader spotted the same night crossing the Thames at Dartford heading north.
Seems that history has turned full circle. These cars were amongst the most stolen when they were new, and now that there's a market in restoring them good ones are prime targets again.
It makes me see red.
Sam.

The only positive you can take regarding such thieves is that they must be truly conscienceless & miserable individuals to knowingly take something that has, in all probability, been worked on for hours & cherished by an honest working person on an average income.

It's a sad fact but the biggest culprits when it comes to classic car (and spare parts) theft are other 'enthusuiasts'. It happens all the time in Mini circles unfortunately. When I had my first Rover P5B I had no garage so had to leave it on the drive overnight, at the time I was paranoid that some banger racer or 'travelling type person' would have it away during the night. Just saw this on the book of Boatrace last night - not very nice news and I'm more carefull where I leave the Escort now, I also regularly check its garage for this reason. So I'll never take it to pay and display car parks now, and I do worry about it overnight when I'm at a Hotel stay for a classic car show next day. Thankfully it's OK so far. Always been a problem with Escorts as my mates MK2 Ghia was nicked and by joy riders and dumped one night in Milton Keynes in 1988, so I've never forgotten that nor when my dads (modern car then) Vauxhall Viva was hi-abbed off the house drive in the middle of the night in 1984 (we just thought that was unthinkable at the time).
Now they would want a 70's or 80's Ford for parts as trim is getting difficult now. I know where there's an admittedly tatty but solid MK3 Cortina (1600XL Dark green) K reg, on a drive in my town and not sure whether to let the owner know that he should really move it somewhere secure due to what's been happening lately. But if he's got any sense after hopefully seeing this article above he'll take some action. Too many nice Fords have already gone walkies including a couple of MK3's and a nice standard 2 door MK1 Escort. Makes my blood boil...

Something need s to happen to regulate this market further. Surely technology can help by putting a tracker on the cars ?
