I've just caught up with The Kipper and The Corpse, which I never think is one of the very top episodes, but is still very, very funny. Some great bits, where Basil and Manuel are carrying the body, intent on hiding it, and they open the door to a room where a guest is blowing up a rubber doll!
"Sorry, sorry" mutters Basil as they retreat quickly
Talking about Fawlty Towers, there's a woman who works in our local Spar who appears to have been trained in customer service by Basil. If you ask for something behind the counter, like Aspirin s or batteries, she snaps back "in a minute when I've done this" then bangs the change down on the desk. Everyone else there is very pleasant, so she stands out!

Must have been related to the silly t**t who used to work in the supermarket near Hatfield Poly who always insisted on slamming your change on the counter and not in your hand.

Last night was my least favourite, The Anniversary, and I do think that in comparison to all the other ones, it is quite poor. Every other episode, in my opinion, is an 8 or 9 out of 10, but I can only give this one 4.
Basil is just being ingratiating with this group who have turned up, and it works best when he's being rude, and one of the guests is an annoying idiot, who Basil would normally be insulting. He's not even rude to Manuel either.
The guy who was the idiot, I seem to remember turned up once in an episode of Minder, he was moaning at Terry because a video he'd rented wasn't the mucky one he was expecting.

Update, yes, he was in an episode of Minder, the actor was Ken Campbell, and he was, apparently, married to Prunella Gee at one point.

He was the partner of Nina Conti the ventriloquist during his final years, I believe. A great character actor. I remember him playing the nasty publican in Breaking Glass where he is on the receiving end of a whack over the head with a guitar wielded by Phil Daniels I have to agree that T he Anniversary was probably the weakest from the series.

I've designated Friday evening as comedy night and I've finished Fawlty Towers and moved onto another favourite of mine, Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights. There is a parallel to both. They both only had two series of 6 episodes each, all excellent, with one exception in each case, and strangely they are both the second to the last episodes of the second series.
The Anniversary and Ladies Night, where Max and Paddy tried to be hit men. Neither worked and are noticeably poor in comparison to all the others.

There's a reboot apparently being done, with John Cleese as Basil again, with his daughter. To me, I can't see it working, Basil needed Manuel and Sybil to argue with and neither are in it. I can see some potential in some of the rubbish of modern life driving him mad, but not sure it will be any good.
