I see that the whole series is on iPlayer at the moment. I only watched a few of the first episodes and then came back to see the last couple. That last episode was really powerful and quite shocking, especially the sequence where the characters watched videos of how they themselves had died. Well worth watching them all from start to finish 3L Gene. Kids insisted on watching the entire "Life on Mars" on DVD again - one episode per evening. We just have got through them - starting on "Ashes.." next, possibly "Auf Pet", "Minder", "Sweeney" next, and have to complete "Professionals Mk1" too.
Beats watching Strictly/Celebrity this & that/ Love Island, and the dreadful 'reboot'; of Supermarket Sweep... I'd rather my kids watch properly produced Television.

Just seems so odd when it’s been around for 13 years and is on dvd and Blu-ray and only now do they have to change it? Mind you, I never saw it live! I can only assume the dvd is the original broadcast. I know there’s the weird Bolan scene etc that’s been in ans out a bit but never noticed any variance in music before now. Completely changes the fee of some of the scenes. Has the music changed since it was originally broadcast on BBC1?
If the music has been changed within the episodes (either on DVD or on a re-broadcast) it will almost certainly be down to licencing/contractual rights over the use of the music.
When "Life on Mars" was made; they would have had an idea of what music they wanted to use - and where; the BBC would have needed to licence this use of the music (usually for one Broadcast), and then there are usually other deals that need to be struck over it's use on repeats and commercially released DVDs (with the latter, I would expect PRS/Artist would want a cut of the profits).
The music was possibly changed because of the licencing/rights (some artists are very funny about this) and replaced with something with less issues.
Most BBC DVD releases have a 'disclaimer' on the back.
Of course - programmes like "Sweeney" never had this issue, as they used library music.
Honestly - it's got to be over 50% of it. It's nuts! Really quite unsettling when you're so very used to what should be playing. I just don't really understand because if it's on DVD with one soundtrack that anyone can watch at any time it's weird that they've needed to change it now. And there's just such a high percentage of change. If it had been one or two artists being difficult, that's one thing but ... don't know; it's weird. The original DVD release of Ballykissangel was missing a whole episode because it had Black Sabbath etc on it a lot - half the episode was in a pub playing music. I actually got a friend who can copy TV onto DVD to record the episode of it for me when it was being re-shown. Now, several years later, I bought a box set and the episode is back in with the original soundtrack so I guess issues were resolved!

Now, several years later, I bought a box set and the episode is back in with the original soundtrack so I guess issues were resolved! The original BBC release of Only Fools and Horses box sets had various edits and music replaced. I am not well up on Record Company / Artist Contracts - though I suspect when it comes to using music Films/TV shows - I'd think it's more the Record Label who are the ones who are more funny.
If I was a music artist, I'd love my music to be used in Film/TV shows - wouldn't it create more publicity for you?
I suppose, depending on the type of deal you signed with your label; certain clauses could be forgotten about after so many years and certain rights will revert back to the artist.
This happens a lot with TV series - most notably, "Auf Pet"; where it was ITV / Central TV who owned the rights to the series. By chance Franc Roddam found some old paperwork and contracts in an attic at home around 2000; he discovered that the rights to the series had reverted back to him.
That is how Series 3 came about. (And it ending up on the BBC)
Music wise - I wasn't aware until recently that there are different "rights" surrounding Broadcasting a programme on TV, and other rights for then restoring, releasing on DVD and distribution. I could never understand why ITV4 kept showing the same old faded/scratched film masters of "Sweeney" - where there were nice restored versions available on DVD.
I would think Music has rights for "Broadcast" and a different set of rights for anything "Commercially available"
Many series with a budget would commission a composer to provide bespoke music, and others (such as Euston Films) used to raid the libraries of KPM/De Wolfe/Regency and the like. They would have no issues at all with the use of music.

With reference to music being replaced, some of you may well remember ‘Sailor’ from 1976 on the BBC. There’s a lovely montage sequence of people at work on HMS Ark Royal whilst using ‘Shine on you crazy diamond’ by Pink Floyd. It’s a great example of footage and music complimenting each other perfectly. Subsequent DVD releases use some horrid Muzak in lieu of the Floyd and it just doesn’t work as well. A real shame.

Don't remember that exact scene but do remember the series. Rather good and a bit sad at the end where they were breaking up the Ark Royal after decommissioning her, which was a pity as she would have a bit useful in 1982 during a bit of unpleasantness down south.

There we go then! No ... hang on. What? The Rolling Stones track IS the replacement as far as I’m concerned?!

You've lost me now Bolly. Are you referring to the the original broadcast, DVD or iplayer version? As far as I'm aware, The Stones' Wild Horses IS the original track from the "Joanie in the cut" scene

I never saw the original broadcast; I was 13 and wasn’t even aware of it. So my knowledge of the show comes entirely from the DVDs where, for example, that scene had “I can’t change it” as the song. I’ve watched it god knows how many times - into the dozens I would think. The first time I’ve ever seen it with anything else was last week on iplayer ... so naturally assumed what I knew was the original and this was changed but apparently I’ve got it all backwards and everything I know is the replacement songs! But what I can’t work out now is ... surely you guys know the DVDs better than the original broadcast unless you’ve got awesome memories and live solely off 2006 recollections :p surely the fact that the music on the DVDs is different isn’t news to you
