Right, now we're getting somewhere. I don't remember what track was used in that scene from watching the original broadcast in 2006. Neither could I remember which track was used on the DVD edit, but having double checked, the DVD version has Frankie Miller's 1973 track "I Can't Change It" playing, while the iplayer has The Rolling Stones "Wild Horses". From what Ashley Pharoah has said, it seems that "Wild Horses" was the intended, as broadcast track while the Frankie Miller "I Can't Change It" was the replacement track on the DVD release.
In conclusion, I think both tracks work well in this scene, though "I Can't Change It" seems the more poignant of the two.
Gene.

I really liked Life on Mars when it was first shown on TV and watched all the episodes
It has never occurred to me to try and rewatch any of them though
Should I be putting that right anytime soon?
And a folllow up question, I get the impression that some of you lovely people might regard Life on Mars as superior to The Sweeney and maybe Minder too?
Does anyone actually prefer Life on Mars to the old classics?

Rewatch them? Most definitely!
I watched LoM when it was first broadcast, bought the DVDs and watched it again, seen various episodes at irregular times on one of the TV channels, and now about to sit through them all again with our youngest daughter who hasn't seen it yet.
The Sweeney I also watched when first broadcast, in recent years I bought the DVDs, seen various episodes on the box, and our daughter has already watched them with me.
As has been mentioned many times before it would be good to be able to 'unsee' them so that they could be viewed for the first time all over again without knowing how each episode or each series panned out.
With regards to considering LoM to be better than The Sweeney? Tough choice. That would be like asking a parent which of their kids they prefer - they love them all equally but each has their own characteristics or foibles to differentiate them.
For me LoM was a recent high quality production that bought a nostalgic element to some quality storylines whereas The Sweeney was of its time and carried that nostalgic element by default to some more quality storylines. It is therefore a difficult choice.
One key point in favour of The Sweeney that has to be recognized is that it was the subject matter of a previous forum and despite the previous forum's issues it was The Sweeney that bought so many of us members together in the first place. Had The Sweeney not been that common bond then we wouldn't have been enjoying 4:3TV - The Retro Channel as we do today.
Sam.

I prefer The Sweeney to Life on Mars personally, although L on M is good. Minder, I only really like the first four series, particularly the first two. After series 4, it went downhill.

It would have to be The Sweeney for me. The characters are just so watchable and there is a barely a duff episode, the soundtrack is brilliant and the cars great too. I loved when I saw it on its original run although I was slow to start, think it was series 2 I started at.

I smell treachery Sam Seriously though, it's easy to see that the majority of our members are focused on The Sweeney, judging by the impact the Sweeney Locations threads I did in comparison to the Life On Mars ones which have received much less in the way of comments/likes. I don't prefer one series over the other. I don't compare them. Why should we? They're both there to be enjoyed. I find Life On Mars more fun than The Sweeney but find The Sweeney more gritty. I absolutely love both series and for the sake of comparison, I think both are leagues ahead of Minder, even though I do enjoy Minder too. As Sam rightly says, it was The Sweeney that got most of us old 'uns together many years ago with the old forum but my interests, and I know those of most of our members far exceed the Sweeney, hence this is not a Sweeney forum. It is a Retro forum which caters for a far wider group. Gene.

Just watching Life on Mars for the umpteenth time! And I have finally come to the conclusion the entire series, for me, now shares the joint favourite spot alongside The Sweeney!!! I watched the episode yesterday where Ray gets in the way when that car bomb goes off! anyway later there’s a scene where the squad are in a old disused swimming baths! Which I’m sure are the old swimming baths on Parr lane in Salford. I used to frequent there quite regular back in 2006 when I used to work in a hostel for homeless addicts and their head office was on Parr Lane further down from the swimming Baths, which I’m sure were also used in a episode of the tv series called Vincent’ which is another old fave of mine, since it’s filmed entirely on location around Manchester, it’s about a private detective called Vincent staring Ray Winstone, incidentally the episode which featured scenes from the swimming baths also stared Liz white AKA Annie Cartwright, whom was one of the main characters of that particular episode.. Really glad to hear you enjoy this great show so much GC It's not the same baths though unfortunately GC. The baths used in Life On Mars were Victoria Baths in Hathersage Road, Chorlton On Medlock. All the locations are now fully listed and categorised in episode order here: > Life On Mars Locations <The particular episode you are referring to was from Series 2 and it was episode 3. You can see the full list of locations here: > LoM Series 2 Episode 3 <Gene.

You're one episode ahead of me GC. We watched Series 2 Episode 2 earlier where Dickie Fingers is pulled from the Allegro and we find out who Harcourt actually is. No spoilers for those yet to watch it! Having been a couple of years since I last watched LoM in its entirety it is good to have had some of the scenes and lines slip from my mind so that they are almost fresh again (if that makes any sense?) Thanks for the info about Annie appearing in Vincent, we have the boxed set of Vincent so will have to give that a revisit at some point. Sam.
