It is hard to believe that it was ten years ago yesterday that Richard Burns, winner of the 2001 World Rally Championship, died from a condition called Astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain tumour at the age of only 34. In his memory the Richard Burns Foundation was set up for those facing neurological injury and illness.
I do recall being pretty cheesed off at the time because George Best died the same day and all the media was dominated by his story. Page after page of George Best tributes but absolutely nothing on Richard Burns. That was appalling when considering that Richard had died so young and after being struck down with the tumour. Best on the other hand was 59 and died through many years of alcohol abuse. It all seemed so unfair!
I admired Richard and his driving style in preference to that of Colin McRae, thought he was a better driver and was destined for further championships. Sadly that wasn't to be.
R.I.P. Richard

A decade? Unbelievable. I always thought Richard was better than McRae too. He was a genuinely nice bloke too. Such a sad sad age to pass away when he still had so much ahead of him.
R.I.P Richard.

Agreed Sam; I remember watching Richard on TV during his campaign for the championship that year. He was a brilliantly talented driver who had such a great career ahead of him sadly cut short at that early age. I have to say I admired Colin McRae too but he had a good grounding from his Father; sadly he's no longer with us either; again his life cut short by an accident he had little control over.
