Yet another thing I don't like about modern cars is the colours, or lack of them. They all seen to be Boringly black or white, or worst of all silver grey metallic. They're so dull. In the 70s, and earlier, back to the 50s, we had such a great range of strong and definite colours. My Austin A40 was light blue with a black top, Dad's Austin 1100 was limeflower, and some of the great ones Ford did, like Daytona Yellow, Orange and so on. I actually liked the beige too!

You are right, proper colours back then. Dad's Zodiac was bright green, a blue Mk3 GXL Cortina, then a brown one. Red Vauxhall Victor. Even his fist Volvo, 760 Turbo was a nice metallic green.

Chrysler, in the 70s, did a smart metallic green too, it was called grasshopper. Also, how good did a 1600E look in metallic gold? Or a mark 3 2.0 GXL in bronze?

I agree, Ford, Vauxhall, Chrysler UK and even BL did some great and varied colours - Some of the metallic blues were nice on the Fords and Vauxhalls, (as on my dads P reg HC Viva) and there were some great "signal" colours from Ford, which were somehow bright without being metallic, like Ford's Signal Yellow, Orange, Signal Amber (a sort of cross between yellow and orange) and Signal red which was a salmon pinkish light red. They were frequently chosen for sportier Fords in the 70's seen on RS and Sports Escorts and Capri MK2's and 3's.
And what about Purple Velvet on a MK1 Escort 1300E?? BL did a similar colour although a bit darker called Black Tulip, seen on Marina TC's and I'm sure was an option on the Mini 1275GT.
I also like metallic Jade green with brown vinyl roof (although black roof also nice with the same colour) on a MK3 Cortina 2000E. And Cameron green on a P6 Rover 3500S looks good.
Not everyone wanted metallics in the 80's either, many sporty "hot hatch" Fords and Vauxhalls then were sold in red, white or black.

I remember that salmon pinkish light red that Ford did, the occasional Mark 5 Cortina I saw in it, don't think it was massively popular, didn't see that many. I've just remembered a couple of others, early 60s, Ford again, a lemon yellow colour, usually with a white roof on a few Anglias, Consuls, Mark 1 Cortinas and Consul Classics. Another one was a lilac colour, slightly later, saw one of two Anglias and Mark 1/2 Cortinas in this.

I think a lot of bland range of colours comes from fleet and lease vehicles. These are usually in those hues mentioned above to appeal for resale. It's why a lot of police motors are silver these days instead of white. As for lease/pcp it's usually silver, grey, black. Anything else is another 1k on the contract.

Talking about that funny salmon pinkish red which Ford did, I saw a Fiat 500 yesterday in the same colour, and one of two others of these seem to be in 70s ish colours. I've seen some in beige and pale blue
