Anyone watching this on Ch4?
Quite interesting and lots of period TV shots.
Not a good time, lots of jobs lost, devasted communities etc.

No, TL, it would have annoyed me so I'm not watching it. I thought that was a very depressing period generally

However I sometimes find things like this a difficult watch. I didn't live near any mining communities, though it was a depressing era. Boys From The Blackstuff was a first class drama, but it took me years before I could watch it again for similar reasons.

I did ok, being in the electronics industry and in a part of the country not affected too badly. Anyway currently watching French Connection ....................

The timing of the strike was wrong, coal stocks were very high when it started, a mate of mine in the railway preservation group I was in at the time, his dad was a signalman at Stalybridge and he said that there had been a massive increase in coal traffic across from the Yorkshire pits to Fiddlers Ferry power station in the 12 months leading up to the strike, presumably to build up stock as a strike was anticipated.
The hope by the NUM was for a bad winter, which would increase pressure on the government, which didn't happen. I didn't live in a mining area, the only pit still operating anywhere near me then was Agecroft, so I didn't see anything first hand
