This magnificent film is on the box tonight, on BBC2, at 10:00pm, so strap yourself in and end your weekend on a high. Five Oscars reflect the impact of the film and even the sequel, four years later, set in Marseilles, is another stunner.
Gritty, edgy and gripping, the original which is mainly set in New York, set the benchmark for tense dramas and car chases.

Yes, still a classic though some of the attitudes are pretty jarring to a modern sensibility. I didn't think it had stood the test of time as well as some but Hackman's performance is really something

It's a great film, I recorded it and rewatched it last night. Gene Hackman is superb in it, and I love the gritty run down looking New York locations, and the great late 60s/early 70s American cars

Hackman is great in it. There's a good pace to the chase scene around the city and onto the subway. As you say, Gritty throughout, Mick. I really must watch the sequel, never seen it. Got a feeling its not as good.

Got a feeling its not as good. You’re in for a right treat Del with the sequel as it’s also excellent, shot on location in Marseille and just as seedy. I went there about ten years ago and much of the central area and back streets still looks the same. It was great seeing some if the film locations and there was even a volleyball match in progress on the beach court, as in the film. The sequel seems to be on less than the original, so when you see it’s on, make sure you catch it.

Thanks you for the SP on it Mick. I will have a look at that when I can. A lot of sequels fail to deliver so glad to hear this is up to scratch.

Very true. There’s probably a whole new thread here of the sequels that do/don’t live up to the original.
For those that do, Aliens is definitely on the list and it’s arguably better than the original.
Of the three Harry Palmer/Len Deighton films from ‘65 (The Ipcress File), ‘66 (Funeral in Berlin) and ‘67 (Billion Dollar Brain),they’re all watchable but I think my favourites are in the order of release, maybe because Ipcress has some great London scenes of the time.

I haven't seen the sequel either, will look out for it. On sequels, I've noticed a couple of trilogies where the middle one of the three is the weakest. Two which spring to mind are Back to the Future and the original three of the Indiana Jones ones. Some just get progressively worse, Jaws for example.

Hackman's performance in The Conversation is a particular favourite and the fact that it generally gets a thumbs up from 4:3tv members is enough to convince me.

Always makes me laugh when it gets to the bit when they literally tear the Lincoln Continental apart and then put it back together so the bad guys don't notice in the space of a few hours! They had actually destroyed at least some of the interior. Could have been made a bit more realistic that part.
