I recorded and watched this recently, on recommendation and due to the fact that it got a four star rating, and I didn't much like it. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were both in it, both of whom I like, so the cast was good, but I just wasn't keen somehow, I think it was way too long, for a start, and the direction, by Michael Mann, didn't somehow do it for me.
Also, I didn't like the location, Los Angeles, I've never been there, but the overwhelming impression I get from films and TV is a completely charachterless and rather ugly place, it looks a bit like Sharston industrial estate, in Manchester, where I work, about 10000 times bigger and with a few palm trees. Some other American cities like New York and Chicago look quite interesting, but this doesn't

Some other American cities like New York and Chicago look quite interesting, but this doesn't You're being a bit unkind to Sharston there Carty. A good assessment there and I know what you mean about Heat, it's a good, very good movie but it doesn't quite gel together and a bit like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly it's arguably 30-45 minutes too long in fact most modern films are guilty of that these days doing in up to 3 hours what old school films could do in 90 minutes or so. Back to Heat De Niro is brilliant and absolutely spot on as Neil Macauley, his support cast Val Kilmer, Danny Trejo and Jon Voight do the job well if perhaps do what they're expected to do. Pacino is a bit of a weak link in it for me as Vincent Hanna with a predictable 'baggage' back story. Pacino also over acts a bit in the role for me all well and good in Scarface but not quite right here and out the two De Niro is the one which plays better and is suited to his role much more than Pacino does. Interestingly Heat was a TV based movie LA Takedown which was directed by Michael Mann in the late '80's and much shorter than what became Heat. It had a bit more in common with films like To Live and Die in LA and similar films from that period. Yes Heat has flaws but it's still a good film and well worth a watch and grows on you the more you watch it. You have to be in the mood for it mind you and settle in for the long haul (nearly 3 hours) it serves up. It's way, way better than most of the stuff (especially that CGI crap) that is around now but as said a bit like say Alien, Blade Runner and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly you have to work up to watch it and go all the way with it. Still anything which features Moby's cover of Joy Division's New Dawn Fades gets a pass from me alright!
