Is it just me, or do we not seen to get many of these anymore? At one time, especially in the 70s, you would get people who were bigger than their area of expertise, like Brian Clough, he was bigger than football, even if you weren't into the game, you knew who he was, Ali was another, and James Hunt, I had, and still don't have any interest in F1, but I did like him, there were a few in politics too, Gerald Nabarro, and in music, John Lydon springs to mind.
Now everything is bland and sanitised and boring and there is no place for interesting mavericks. Sad.

Must be a few proper ones though.

There are still a few about, unfortunately they often get buried very quickly by the holier than though mob on social media who get offended at the slightest thing, and seem to have a real problem with those who dare to voice a different opinion to their own echo chamber, despite calling themselves open minded and tolerant folk. No-one is perfect and some of the characters we miss are quite flawed individuals, but it's their very individualism that makes them the characters they are! Villain

At one time, especially in the 70s, you would get people who were bigger than their area of expertise, like Brian Clough, he was bigger than football, even if you weren't into the game, you knew who he was, Spot on, Carty. Brian was a real personality and someone I have always found fascinating despite a lack of interest in football. I always remember Mike Yarwood's impersonations of him and the politicians and union leaders of the time. How many people would recognise an impersonation of a politician these days? I can hardly recall the names of any of the current ones, apart from those at the top. I find myself watching panel shows now and again and I'm constantly Googling who the majority of the guests are and what they are supposed to be famous for.
