This is aimed at the group members who will be in my age group and were around in the great decade!
What bit of the 70s do you have particularly great and fond memories of? Here are a few of mine:
It's mostly from the second half, from 75 on, as I've got the clearest and most detailed memories of, aided probably by the fact that I started following the music charts seriously from then on.
The summer of 76 is an obvious and automatic choice, as is the autumn of the year. A particular favourite, with great memories is the spring/early summer of 77, learning to drive, my first girlfriend..
The autumn and winter of 78/9 is another, brilliant music, working for the first time, and the summer and Autumn of 79 too, my first motor, discos, nights out, successfully pulling the previous years carnival queen..
Wonderful times, with the greatest ever soundtrack, memories which are as clear as if it was yesterday that no one can ever take away😀

Oh no ! When I first read this I thought we had to choose just one year Very much like yourself, Carty, my vivid memories coincide with the time I started following the charts which would have been late 73. 1974 was a standout year. I became obsessed with listening to pop radio whilst having two weeks off school with chicken pox. Up until then, I followed all the glam bands, but Johnnie Walker's lunchtime show on Radio 1 introduced me to albums and artists like Steely Dan, Van Morrison, The Eagles. Still liked my Slade, Bolan, Sweet etc though. Started secondary school in this year and hung around with fellow music obsessives who were more likely to talk about last night's TOTP than whether or not Billy Bremner had a good game for Leeds last Saturday. 1976 is an interesting year as everyone who lived through it loves that summer. To be honest, dare I say it was a bit TOO hot for me. Some fantastic music though. 1977- punk passed me by at the time, but another good year for music. Some great children's dramas on TV made in this year and the summer, whilst not as hot as 76, was still enjoyable. If I think of a snapshot of my childhood, the picture postcard of a perfect time, it's sat in the garden during the summer of 77, grabbing a bag of podded peas and a packet of Tudor crisps from the mobile shop that would appear weekly. 1978 - The best year for music and TV without a doubt. You were allowed to like The Bee Gees, disco and New Wave without aligning yourself with one genre. Holiday in Cornwall to the soundtrack of a great summer. Started watching "Play For Today" and reading a lot, trying to appear arty and intellectual but failing miserably - at least with the girls I was trying to pull. 1979 - The first six months. Positives - great music. Negatives - a bad winter and later in the year starting my first job which wasn't the greatest introduction to the world of work. Great topic !

If you had to pin me down and to pick one year, I think overall 1977. Aged 17, learning to drive, great memories of that year, music, football, just everything really. Like Night, I didn't immediately get punk, but did get into it later in the year

Watching the 1970 World Cup with my Dad as an 8 year old was amazing
I vividly remember the Arsenal winning the double in 1971
It's the first FA Cup final I can remember clearly
I loved Charlie George
Glam Rock was fab as a pre-teen I flipping loved Bowie, Roxy, Sweet, Slade, Suzi, Sparks...
The Sweeney, of course
The 1974 World Cup Final and the amazing Dutch team being cruelly denied by West Germany
And then, as a 14 year old in 1976...
PUNK ROCK
I started going to gigs in 1977 and loved every second, despite constantly having to avoid getting beaten up, not always successfully
First job in 1978 as a messenger for film company in Soho - incredible times
And then into clubbing at Billys and the Blitz
Quite a decade

It's interesting to read peoples recollections from that fabulous decade. Good thread.
