I rewatched this a few nights ago and must echo the universal acclaim for Colin Welland's performance
Right up there with the best Sweeney villains and one of the great acting performances of the entire series
Am I right in thinking that Faces writer Murray Smith never wrote another episode? If so, anyone know why not?
Everything about Faces is top notch - the locations, the cast, the script, the German terrorists, the unrelenting downbeat mood, the blags and the punch ups.
5/5
He did write the excellent Strangers starring Don Henderson. The series 3 two-parter Armed & Dangerous/A Racing Certainty would have been right at home as a Sweeney tale as it involves gangsters, cop killers, a hospital assassination attempt and horse racing.

I've been watching this episode recently. It started when I watched it on one of the re play channels, ITV hub I think, anyway, I always get the DVD out and re watch whichever episode I've watched on TV, usually several times. This is a great episode and as everyone has said Colin Welland was great as Tober. One bit of dialogue I quite like is when the German walks in and says "save all that adrenaline for the driving" to which Tober replies "Yes, I'll be driving in a minute" I don't know why I just find that line brilliant, of course with all of his other dialogue too.
Proper hard man too especially when the chair is smashed over his back and he doesn't even flinch. That must have come sharp in reality. That scene was acted well I thought, very realistic. Some fight scenes can be a bit wooden I think but that scene isn't like that.
I first saw this episode on the Car chases DVD if anyone remembers those ? which I think came before the complete series set.

I first saw this episode on the Car chases DVD if anyone remembers those ? which I think came before the complete series set. My first purchase of Sweeney DVD too, I've got "Bank Jobs" too which features "Contact Breaker" & "Night Out". I did find it weird when Tober puts Doc Boyd's money away with the kitten on his shoulder, doesn't really go with the hard man image.

I’ve also got the bank jobs DVD too and bizarrely Diamond Geezers on DVD. I always thought that one was VHS only.
I know what you mean about the kitten scene but it shows he does have a heart and is a decent bloke regardless of the blaggings he gets involved in.
Also, he keeps the money for Doc Boyd and puts it in the drawer but Doc then walks in the room right after.

That might be to show that he might be an out and out hard man / villian of the old school - but he does have some principles too.
A lot of criminals of the old school will ensure that proceeds are evenly split, and also ensure that each member of the firm gets their cut - esp where there are new "faces" involved - those that are untested / untrusted.
Fred Foreman talked a lot about that in a documentary he did some time ago. His "firm" of faces - aside from their involvement with the Kray twins - was kept very tight knit, they didn't mix together, they didn't socialise and they didn't flash their cash - to the observer, it was business as normal. If a member of the firm was "inside" - they would put cash aside for him - ready for when he came out.
I don't condone what any of these chaps got up to -but as criminals, they had a little more sense than some of the idiots roaming our streets today.
Back then - there was plenty of material around for writers - and many of the old school "faces" were still alive too. (some even re-surfaced as stunt men in the Sweeney too!).

Grange Hill Series 8 Episode 9
Gonch has set up a video club, which is a money making scam, and the boys are in Hollo's house watching a film. It's the opening scene to the episode :-

Faces is a good script, but probably a bit frustrating at the end when The German try’s to blackmail Tober into doing one more blag otherwise he’ll get his daughter! under normal circumstances I think someone like Tober would just scragg the German, regardless of his blackmail threats, but I suppose it was inevitable that Tober complied with the German, for the purchase of the storyline and ending of the episode..
