A thread where those of us who don't know everything (even though we are 137 years old) can ask for advice.
Number 1 ............... when driving an automatic should you put it in neutral when waiting at the lights i.e. is it bad for the transmission if you don't? I always do.

A thread where those of us who don't know everything (even though we are 137 years old) can ask for advice. Number 1 ............... when driving an automatic should you put it in neutral when waiting at the lights i.e. is it bad for the transmission if you don't? I always do. Yes ideally you should. The automatic gearbox has an internal clutch inside that will wear if held in gear and not moving. Think of holding a manual gearbox car on a slope by the clutch and not moving, the clutch is engaged and dragging to hold the car steady. It is much the same that you'd be doing to the auto box clutch, it is engaged and wants to drive forward but your brakes are preventing that from happening. Another thing that I always consider when buying an auto is if it has a tow-bar. I found out the expensive way that the car I'd bought was used to tow a boat so the autobox clutch failed at 75k instead of achieving any greater mileage. The estate car I have now is an auto but I'm the one that put the tow-bar on and all I tow is a small 5' x 3' box trailer or the motorbike trailer. Oh, and congratulations for your 137th birthday. Sam

I agree with Samuel and I've always done the same when driving an auto. I try not to hold manual cars on the clutch too. Must say that these days the new electronic handbrakes make that a more regular occurance on a manual. Horrible things those EPBs
