I like the camper vans, but not the lowered suspension and poor paintwork. There's one which parks in Wythenshawe near where I work and it looks like it's scraping the ground. Why?

I'm the opposite Carty. I like the look of the worn out patina paint. It gives it character and shows it's had a life. I know not everyone gets it but there is a huge following for it and I think VW vans and American trucks are of the few that can carry it off. The lowering bit is also about looks but does make them handle better.

I agree that it is possible to over restore a car, I saw an MG at a show once where everything had been chromed and polished to an extent where the car would not have looked like that when it was new. Similarly, I'm not keen on the car being shabby looking.
I had a Mark 2 Cortina project a few years ago, which I sadly had to sell due to redundancy, and I aimed at making it like one you would have seen in the 70s, on the road, ie not immaculate, but presentable.
