I think that BBC and ITV complemented each other at this period. The BBC were better at comedy than ITV were but ITVs dramas and police programmes were better than the BBCs. The BBC efforts I always thought were a bit stagey and stilted somehow, whereas ITVs were much more natural and of the real world.
Witness The Sweeney (utterly brilliant) compared with Softly Softly (dull and forgettable imo)

For those who want a reminder of the series there are some on YT. Plenty of familiar faces.

I watched The Gentle Touch back in the day as a kid. I really need to watch it now and see if I get on with it. I’m a huge admirer of William Marlowe and it’s be good to watch him at least.

Btw, the episode I mentioned 'Menaces', a partial remake of The Sweeney ep 'Feet Of Clay', is on dailymotion.
Talking of remakes, the Gentle Touch theme by Roger Webb is more or less a speeded up version of his theme for 'Hammer House Of Horror'.

I watched an episode from series 5 yesterday on yt called 'Appearances Can Be Deceptive'. There's a scene near the end of the episode which is one of the most shocking things I've seen on a tv show. I won't say what happens as it will spoil it but it's worth watching the episode just for this bit.

Did you just pick an episode from series 5 at random? Completely unrelated but I have it on at the moment and they’re banging on about cheque cards. When I worked in a shop when I was about 19, an old lady asked me if she could pay with a cheque card and I hadn’t a clue what it meant so I asked her to show me (it was just a debit card!) but I’ve always wondered what they actually were. So now I know. Only taken ten years!

They were a bit different to debit cards, they had a number, which the retailer would write on the back of the cheque and it would then be guaranteed, ie, the bank would have to pay it, regardless of how little was in the account, up to £50.00, so if you were overdrawn you could still write out cheques for up to this amount. I got one in 1978 when I started work.
Presumably, it wasn't then possible to check an account balance remotely.

I was looking at the imdb page of Adrienne Posta, an actress I had been watching in something else & I noticed she was in this episode so I searched for it on youtube. I think I might buy the complete series on dvd, I don't have BritBox & the episodes on yt are horrible quality. It often happens that I'll watch episodes of a sereies on yt & then end up buying the dvd, this particular episode is one which I wish I had watched properly on tv as the shocking moment I mentioned made my jaw drop.

This has just been added to Britbox so I’m giving it a try. I have no idea how it was received then (although there seems to be a fair amount of it) nor how it has aged, as it were, but so far it is retaining my interest. Just wondered if any of you had thoughts either way? I do love seeing England in the 80s on screen, whatever I’m watching. I can’t even tell you why, it just feels like home, even though I’ve never been there. I remember watching it last year Alex when it was on, I think it was on the drama channel, so I set a series link for it to record. I thought it was really good and the style kinda reminded me of Z cars in way, and like a lot of things back then, was a bit slower pace. I agree with ya about the 80s thing! and looking back and reflecting, it’s still, and always will be my favourite decade! for absolutely every reason, especially the music

I got the dvd set the other day, 17 discs. The first episode is the only time we see Maggie Forbes husband played by Leslie Schofield, he's also in the police but is fed up with the job, he has a Regan-like rant about the names he's called by the public- fuzz, filth, fascist, then later in a 'Ringer'-like moment he gets shot by an armed robber played by Brian Croucher.
