Yes I've heard of van Hoogstraten, he comes across as some kind of Bond villain. He started a huge mansion somewhere near Brighton which now is, apparently abandoned. Reading up about him, he seems a deeply unpleasant man.

Urban explorers now visit his abandoned, partly built 'palace'. I don't think I'd risk giving it a visit given what happens to those who cross him.

Van Hoogstraten's a low life but a clever low life who despite being a odious character can strangely draw people in to his world/web.
Wasn't he famous for his 'ALL tenants are SCUM!' line whenever anyone questioned his dubious tactics?

I think it is down to the complete absence of tattoos and piercings, I didn't see one tattoo throughout the whole clip. It wouldn't be like that now, all skin on view would be like a paisley parade. Sam. Saw one guy today where his whole forearm was just solid blue, god knows how long that took to do. Or why he did it. Show them this before they go under the needle!

Looks like you couldn't move for celebs in Torbay, I wonder if Tarby ever visited? Looks a nice place, though everywhere looked so much better than it does now on those old newsreels.
I often think that the people seem to look healthier and happier in these old newsreels too. Drugs? Probably the reason these days sadly.

Talking of tattoos I watched a bit of 'Extreme Tattoo Fixers' last night, a woman with #c*mtunnel tattooed on her arse wanted it covered up. Like most of the other people I've seen on these shows with rude tattoos, her reason was 'my kids are getting older & I don't want them to read it'. Which begs the question, why then go on national tv to show the tattoo to hundreds of thousands of people, including your own kids who will see the repeat showing in a few years time?
You get these people with tattoos on their arse or belly or somewhere else that's covered by clothes & they say 'I don't want people to see it', who is going to see it unless you show it to them? Then there are brides to be who don't want their tats showing on their wedding day, haven't they heard of concealing make up?
On the subject of people looking fitter in the past, I read an article that said the amount of food we eat & the amount of activity/exercise we take has not actually changed noticeably since the 70's. The conclusion was that it was what we eat that has changed & created the obesity problem.

But if they don't want people to see it why have it done in the first place? I don't get the mentality of that at all. Then there are brides to be who don't want their tats showing on their wedding day, haven't they heard of concealing make up?
On the flip side to that my son went to a school friend's wedding. It was the full affair, white wedding, top hats and tails, and the bride wore a white sleeveless wedding dress - sleeveless aside from the multi-coloured tattoo 'sleeve' all the way down her right arm. It looked ridiculous.
I asked a colleague once why she'd had her tattoo done and received the standard response: "to show my individuality" whereupon my reply was "as individual as the other 10 million people in the UK that have got themselves inked?"
Sam.

Got nothing against people getting tat's but it's not really for me personally.
Is tattooing as big now amongst Millennial's as it was in the 90's/00's when it really exploded? Don't really see as many younger ones with them as you did 15-20 years ago although perhaps looking at their parents regretful 'tramp stamps' from Ibiza, Magaluf, Bangkok etc. may have put them off.
Some can look good when done well but personally I think most aren't/cowboy jobs etc.

Tattoos are something I'm with Sam on, I just can't stand them, they're hideous and disfiguring.
